The standard explanation

Okinawa was not part of Japan for most of its history. From 1429 to 1879 it was the Ryukyu Kingdom, which traded with China and Southeast Asia and had its own king, language and court music. Shurijo in Naha was the king's castle. It has burned down five times, most recently in October 2019, and the main hall is being rebuilt, with completion planned for autumn 2026.

If you only see Okinawa as beaches, Shurijo will change that. From 1429 to 1879 these islands were the Ryukyu Kingdom, an independent country that made its living as a trading middleman between China, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Shurijo was the king's castle, and it does not look like a Japanese castle at all: red lacquer, Chinese-style roofs, dragons on the pillars. The kingdom was annexed by Japan in 1879 and the royal family was moved to Tokyo.

The castle burned in the battle of Okinawa in 1945, was rebuilt in 1992, and burned again in October 2019, which people there watched live on television in the middle of the night. It is being rebuilt once more, with the main hall due in autumn 2026. The work has been open to visitors, so you can watch carpenters doing it.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy doesn't it look Japanese?

Because the kingdom's closest cultural ties were with China. The red lacquer, the roof shape and the dragon pillars follow Chinese court models, adapted to a hot, typhoon-prone island.

QDo people in Okinawa speak a different language?

The Ryukyuan languages are related to Japanese but are not mutually intelligible with it, and UNESCO lists several as endangered. Most people today speak Japanese, often with a distinct accent and vocabulary.

QWhat happened here in the war?

Okinawa was the only place in Japan where a ground battle was fought, in 1945. Around a quarter of the civilian population died. The Japanese army had its headquarters in tunnels under the castle hill, which is why it was shelled.

A common misunderstanding
