One small machine causes more confusion for first-time visitors than almost anything else in Japan: the meal ticket machine. In a lot of ramen shops, standing noodle bars, curry chains and set-meal restaurants, you do not order from a server.
You stop at a vending machine by the entrance, insert cash or tap a card, press the button for your dish and any extras, and collect a small printed ticket. You hand the ticket to the staff, sit down, and your food arrives; when you finish, you simply leave. The system exists because these restaurants run on thin margins and fast turnover, and it means the cook never touches money.
A useful rule of thumb is that the shop's signature dish is usually the button at the top left, often the biggest one. Machines increasingly have English and photos, but in an old shop you may need to match the characters on the button to the menu on the wall.

QWhat if I make a mistake or the machine only shows Japanese?
Ask the staff; they are used to it and will usually come out and press the right button for you. If you bought the wrong ticket, tell them before the food is made and they will normally sort it out. Pointing at a photo on the wall works fine.
店員に聞いてください。慣れているので、たいてい出てきて正しいボタンを押してくれます。間違った券を買ったら、料理を作る前に伝えれば、ふつう対応してくれます。壁の写真を指さすだけでも通じます。
QWhy not just order at the counter like everywhere else?
Speed and hygiene. Staff never handle cash, so nobody has to wash hands between the register and the noodles, there is no waiting for a bill, and one cook can run the whole shop at lunch. It also stops customers from lingering after they finish.

QDoes the machine take cards?
Older ones take only cash, often coins and thousand-yen notes, so keep some on you. Newer machines accept transit cards and phone payments, and a few accept credit cards. Change comes out at the bottom.
