The active ingredient is a pyrethroid, which works on insects at doses that are considered low-risk for people, and the coils have been in ordinary home use for generations. Still, it is smoke, so use it in a ventilated place and keep it away from bedding and small children.

Most standard coils are made to last roughly a whole evening and night, so one is enough for a bedroom or a veranda. You can snap a coil in half, or clip it with the little metal marker sold for the purpose, if you want it to burn for less time.
