The shortest answer that works

Air conditioning in Japan is a room-by-room unit on the wall, and using it in summer is now treated as necessary.

The standard explanation

Japanese homes rarely have central air conditioning. Instead each room has a wall-mounted unit with an outdoor condenser, controlled by its own remote. It both cools and heats, so it is often the main heater too. Offices follow a guideline of setting cooling around 28 degrees, and a campaign called Cool Biz lets staff drop jackets and ties. At the same time, heatstroke warnings now urge people to use cooling rather than endure without it.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

A Japanese summer is hot and humid in a way that surprises visitors, and how the country cools itself has changed within living memory. Homes almost never have central air conditioning. Each room gets its own wall-mounted unit, with a pipe running to a condenser outside, and its own remote control, which means you cool the room you are in and close the door.

The same unit heats in winter, so in many homes it is the only heating as well. Since 2005 a campaign called Cool Biz has encouraged offices to set cooling around twenty-eight degrees and to let staff work without jackets and ties, which changed summer business dress nationally.

The other half of the story is that endurance is no longer the virtue it was. Summers have grown hotter, heatstroke kills people every year, many of them elderly and indoors, and public messaging now tells people to use air conditioning and drink water rather than tough it out. Schools that had no cooling in classrooms have been installing it.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy is every room a separate unit?

Japanese homes are small, rooms are separated by doors and sliding panels, and households have preferred to cool only the room in use. The units are also cheap to install and replace individually. The downside is that hallways, kitchens and bathrooms are often left uncooled.

QWhat is the 28 degrees rule?

It is a guideline for the room temperature in offices, not a legal limit, and it is often misunderstood as a setting for the machine. Many workplaces set the machine to 28 and end up warmer than intended. Public messaging now stresses that the number should not override health.

QHow do I use the remote if it is all in Japanese?

Look for the colored labels: blue is cooling, red is heating, green is dehumidifying, which is useful in the rainy season. The arrows set the temperature and the fan symbol sets the fan. If a unit blows weakly, ask about cleaning the filter, which is a common cause.
