The standard explanation
A listing like "1LDK" means one bedroom plus an L (living), D (dining) and K (kitchen) area, usually combined into one open room. "2DK" means two bedrooms with a smaller dining-kitchen but no separate living room, a step down in size and price. Room area is given in square meters or in jo, the tatami-mat unit, where one jo is roughly 1.65 square meters. Rent listings also separate the monthly rent from key money and a deposit, both charged only when moving in.

Every Japanese rental listing carries a short code like 1K, 1DK, 2LDK or 3LDK, and once you learn the grammar it tells you almost everything about the layout at a glance. The number is how many rooms besides the kitchen area; the letters describe that kitchen area itself.
K alone means just a kitchen space, DK adds room for a dining table, and LDK means a full combined living-dining-kitchen, bigger and pricier again. So a 1K is a studio with a small kitchen nook, and a 1LDK has a proper living room attached to one bedroom.
Room sizes are given in square meters or in jo, counting tatami mats, where six jo is a common bedroom size at roughly ten square meters. Listings also separate one-time costs from the rent: shikikin, a deposit partly refundable when you move out, and reikin, key money paid to the landlord that is never refunded, a custom rooted in the postwar housing shortage.
日本の賃貸物件の情報には、1K、1DK、2LDK、3LDKのような短い記号が必ずついていて、この文法さえ覚えれば、間取りのほとんどが一目でわかります。数字はキッチン部分以外の部屋の数、アルファベットはそのキッチン部分そのものを表します。

DK is a dining-kitchen big enough for a table but not a separate living room; LDK adds proper living room space, so it's larger and usually costs more for the same number of bedrooms.
