Japan's summer is hot, wet and full of mosquitoes, and for more than a century the standard household answer has been katori senko, the mosquito coil. It is a flat spiral of green incense, about the width of a hand, pressed from powder that includes an insecticide originally taken from a chrysanthemum species.
You light the outer tip, rest the coil on a small metal stand, and it burns inward slowly through the evening, giving off a thin smoke with a distinctive dry, sweet smell. The most loved holder is a ceramic pig with an open mouth, which you find at hardware stores and old inns alike.
Electric plug-in repellents have taken over indoors, but the coil survives on balconies, in gardens, at campsites and in every nostalgic summer scene. The spiral shape is said to be a Japanese invention, devised so that one stick could burn far longer without breaking. I cannot smell it without thinking of a wind chime and a cold slice of watermelon.

QIs the smoke safe to breathe?
AThe active ingredient is a pyrethroid, which works on insects at doses that are considered low-risk for people, and the coils have been in ordinary home use for generations. Still, it is smoke, so use it in a ventilated place and keep it away from bedding and small children.
あの煙は吸っても大丈夫ですか。有効成分はピレスロイド系で、人には低リスクとされる量で虫に効き、蚊取り線香は何世代にもわたって家庭でふつうに使われてきました。それでも煙なので、風通しのある場所で使い、寝具や小さな子どもから離してください。
QWhy a pig?
ANobody is completely sure, and there are several stories. One common explanation is that the holder began as a wider clay pot that was narrowed to concentrate the smoke, and the result happened to look like a pig, which craftsmen then made deliberately. Whatever the origin, it is now the classic shape.
どうして豚の形なのですか。はっきりとは分かっておらず、いくつか説があります。よく言われるのは、口の広い土器の入れ物を煙を集めるために細くしたら偶然豚に似た形になり、職人がそれをわざと作るようになったという説です。由来はともかく、今では定番の形です。

AMost standard coils are made to last roughly a whole evening and night, so one is enough for a bedroom or a veranda. You can snap a coil in half, or clip it with the little metal marker sold for the purpose, if you want it to burn for less time.
一巻きでどれくらい燃えるのですか。標準的な渦巻きはおおむね夕方から一晩持つように作られていて、寝室や縁側なら一巻きで足ります。短く使いたいときは半分に折るか、そのために売られている小さな金属の留め具で止めます。

豆知識Background
蚊取り線香は明治時代に、除虫菊の殺虫成分を使って和歌山の業者が棒状の線香として売り出し、のちに長時間燃える渦巻き型を考案したとされます。渦巻きにしたのは、棒状では燃焼時間が短く折れやすかったためと伝えられ、二巻きを組み合わせた形で打ち抜き、使うときに外して分ける作り方は今も続いています。原料の除虫菊は戦前には日本の主要な輸出農産物の一つで、現在は合成のピレスロイドが主に使われています。「蚊遣り豚」と呼ばれる陶器の豚の入れ物は三重県の四日市の萬古焼などが知られ、由来には諸説あります。俳句では蚊遣り火が夏の季語で、縁側・風鈴・スイカとともに日本の夏の原風景をつくる小道具です。
