Ibusuki is a hot spring town at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima, in Kyushu. Hot spring water flows under the beach, so the sand itself is hot. You put on a yukata, or a light cotton robe, lie down, and staff shovel warm sand over you up to the neck. Most people stay about ten minutes, then wash off in a regular bath.

Most hot springs in Japan mean soaking in water, but Ibusuki in Kagoshima offers something different: a sand bath. Hot spring water runs under the beach, so the sand is warm enough to make you sweat.
You change into a yukata, a light cotton robe, and lie on your back while staff shovel sand over your body, leaving only your head out. A towel under your head keeps the sand out of your hair. The weight and heat of the sand feel heavy at first, then surprisingly relaxing.
About ten minutes is usually enough. The custom is said to go back several hundred years, to a time when local people dug holes in the warm beach to bathe. I think it is one of the most unusual ways to enjoy an onsen in Japan.
日本の温泉といえば、たいていはお湯につかることですが、鹿児島の指宿には一風変わったものがあります。砂むし温泉です。浜の下を温泉が流れているため、砂は汗が出るほど温かくなっています。
浴衣に着替えてあおむけに寝ると、係の人がスコップで体に砂をかけてくれて、頭だけが出た状態になります。頭の下にはタオルを敷くので、髪に砂は入りません。砂の重さと熱は、最初はずっしりと感じますが、やがて意外なほどくつろげます。

No. You wear the yukata the facility lends you, and the staff will tell you what to wear underneath. After the sand bath, you rinse off the sand and then use the regular bath naked, like any onsen.

QIs it too hot for someone who doesn't like heat?
It can feel very hot, especially around the feet. Staff can put less sand on you, and you can get out early whenever you want. People with heart problems or high blood pressure should ask first.
かなり熱く感じることがあり、とくに足のあたりが熱くなりがちです。係の人に頼めば砂を少なめにしてもらえますし、いつでも早めに出られます。心臓の病気や高血圧のある人は、先に相談したほうがよいでしょう。

FACTThe heat comes from hot spring water under the ground, not from the sun. It works in the rain and on cloudy days, and many places have a roof over the sand.
