The shortest answer that works

The standard explanation

An ekiden is a road relay run in stages, each stage several kilometers or more, with runners passing a cloth sash worn across the chest. It is a Japanese invention and is followed closely on television, especially the university race held over January 2nd and 3rd. The sash, not the individual time, is what the teams talk about.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Ekiden is a Japanese invention: a long-distance relay run on roads, divided into stages of anything from about five to over twenty kilometers, in which runners hand over a cloth sash worn diagonally across the body. The name comes from the old post station system, where messages were carried in relays by horse.

The first race was run in 1917 over the old highway between Kyoto and Tokyo, and the most famous, a university race between Tokyo and Hakone, began in 1920 and is now broadcast live across two full mornings on the second and third of January. Ratings are enormous.

What makes it emotionally different from a marathon is the sash. If a team falls too far behind, the next runner is started before the sash arrives, which means the chain is broken, and for the runner who could not hand it over that is remembered far longer than a slow time.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhat happens if the sash doesn't arrive in time?

Officials start the next runner anyway, using a substitute sash, once the gap passes a set limit. The team keeps racing but the chain is formally broken, and this is treated as a significant thing rather than a technicality.

QWhy is it so popular compared with individual running?

Partly because it is a team event in a sport that is usually solitary, and partly because of the New Year timing. Families watch it at home over the holiday, and the route passes through ordinary neighborhoods lined with spectators.
