If someone in Tokyo has one free night and wants a hot spring, they go to Hakone. It is about ninety minutes by train, and the whole area sits inside the crater of a volcano that collapsed a long time ago.
A standard trip is one night at an inn: you arrive in the afternoon, bathe, put on the cotton robe the inn gives you, eat a dinner of many small dishes, bathe again before bed and again before breakfast.
Around that, people ride a small switchback railway up the mountainside, a ropeway over the steam vents at Owakudani where the ground still smells of sulfur, and a boat across Lake Ashi.
