Most people think they are a little better than average. But not everyone can be above average! In one study in Britain, 79 prisoners compared themselves with people outside prison. They said they were kinder and more moral than the average person.
Only for "following the law" did they say they were about the same. It seems that almost everyone thinks well of themselves.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. For which quality did the prisoners say they were about the same as others?
Only for "following the law" did they say they were about the same.
Q3. In this passage, "thinks well of themselves" means people ...
If everyone believes they are above average, many of them must be wrong. But this is exactly how most people think, a tendency called the better-than-average effect. In a 2014 study, 79 prisoners in Britain rated themselves on nine traits, such as kindness, morality and trustworthiness. On almost every trait, they rated themselves higher than the average person outside prison.
The only exception was "law-abiding," where they said they were about the same. A 2020 analysis of 124 papers covering more than 950,000 people found that the effect is strong and reliable. It was larger for personality traits than for abilities, and smaller among East Asian participants than among European Americans.

Q1. What is the better-than-average effect?
Q2. According to the 2020 analysis, when was the effect larger?
It was larger for personality traits than for abilities とあるので C。
Q3. What can we infer from the prisoners' answer about "law-abiding"?
Ask people how kind or honest they are compared with the average person, and most will put themselves somewhere above the middle, which cannot be true for everyone. A 2014 study of 79 British prisoners showed how stubborn this better-than-average effect is. The prisoners rated themselves on nine traits, including kindness, morality and trustworthiness, and judged themselves superior to the average member of the public on almost every one.
Only on being law-abiding did they place themselves merely level with others. That study was small, and its self-reports may partly reflect a wish to look good. Much bigger studies point the same way. A 2020 meta-analysis of 124 papers and over 950,000 participants found the effect to be large and robust, with little sign of publication bias, though it was weaker among East Asian participants.
Its size depends heavily on how the questions are asked. People also tend to see others as more biased than themselves, a pattern known as the bias blind spot. The effect can even flip. For hard skills such as juggling, many people rate themselves below average, apparently because they judge by their own experience rather than by what they know of others.
