Some people say that we cannot breathe through our nose and mouth at the same time. Try it. You can do it! In fact, when we run or exercise hard, many of us use both the nose and the mouth to get more air.
But there is one thing we really cannot do at the same time. We cannot swallow and breathe together. When we swallow, our breathing stops for a moment.

Q1. What is the main point of the passage?
Q2. When do many people use both the nose and the mouth?
when we run or exercise hard, many of us use both the nose and the mouth とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "swallow" means to ...
A popular piece of trivia says that humans cannot breathe through the nose and mouth at the same time. This is simply false. In a 1980 study, healthy adults exercised harder and harder while researchers measured the air passing through their noses and mouths. Most breathed only through the nose at rest, but as they needed more air, they switched to breathing through both at once.
The nose is narrow, so the mouth works as an extra path. What we truly cannot do together is swallow and breathe. When we swallow, part of the throat closes the way to the nose, a small flap covers the airway, and breathing stops briefly. This prevents food from entering the lungs.

The trivia claim that people cannot breathe through the nose and mouth simultaneously is easily disproved, yet it may have spread because it blends with facts that are genuinely true. Physiological research shows that oronasal breathing is routine. In a 1980 study, healthy adults performed increasingly intense exercise while the airflow through each route was measured. Most breathed nasally at rest, but once their ventilation rose past a certain point, they switched to breathing through both nose and mouth, since the nasal passage, which warms, humidifies and filters air, offers too much resistance for large volumes.
A related belief, that infants are obligatory nose breathers, has also been revised: many babies can breathe through the mouth when the nose is blocked. What humans really cannot do at the same time is swallow and breathe. Because the airway and the food passage cross in the throat, the soft palate rises to seal off the nasal cavity, the epiglottis covers the entrance to the windpipe, and breathing pauses. A detailed study of adults found that most swallowed during exhalation and continued exhaling afterward, a pattern that probably helps prevent residue from entering the airway.
