Why Ants Slip on Smooth Earwax

1Scientists in the United States have found that earwax is slippery but also sticky. This may help keep bugs out of our ears.

2The team at Georgia Tech tested earwax with ants. When ants tried to climb smooth earwax, they fell right away. On rough earwax, the ants were slower, but they could still move up.

3Next, the team made a tunnel and covered it with earwax. The wax stuck to the ants. The ants worked hard to clean themselves, but some wax was still on them after several minutes.

4Earwax has tiny holes that take in water. These holes soak up the liquid that helps ants hold on to things. The team also made fake earwax, and the ants had trouble with it too. The study was published in the journal Soft Matter.

全文訳

1アメリカの科学者たちが、耳あかはすべりやすくて、しかもベタベタもすることを見つけました。これが、虫を耳に入れないために役立っているのかもしれません。

2ジョージア工科大学のチームは、アリを使って耳あかを調べました。つるつるの耳あかを登ろうとすると、アリはすぐに落ちました。でこぼこの耳あかでは、アリはおそくなりましたが、まだ上に進めました。

3次に、チームはトンネルを作り、中を耳あかでおおいました。耳あかはアリの体にくっつきました。アリは一生けんめい体をきれいにしましたが、数分たっても耳あかが少し残っていました。

4耳あかには、水を吸いこむ小さな穴があります。この穴が、アリが物につかまるために使う液を吸ってしまいます。チームは人工の耳あかも作りましたが、アリはそれにも苦戦しました。この研究は、学術誌「ソフトマター」に発表されました。

文法ポイント：接続詞 when（～するとき）

when のあとに〈主語＋動詞〉を続けて、「～するとき」と時を表す形。本文の When ants tried to climb smooth earwax, they fell right away.（アリがつるつるの耳あかを登ろうとしたとき、すぐに落ちた）がその例。when の部分が文の前に来るときは、そのあとにコンマを置く。
