AI Models Can Define Concepts but Often Fail to Apply Them

1Large language models, the AI behind chatbots such as ChatGPT, can often explain a concept correctly and still fail to apply it, researchers have found. The team calls this gap potemkin understanding. The name refers to Potemkin villages, fake fronts built to look real with nothing behind them.

2The study was written by Marina Mancoridis and Sendhil Mullainathan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Keyon Vafa of Harvard University and Bec Weeks of the University of Chicago. It was posted online in June 2025 and presented at the International Conference on Machine Learning that year. The researchers tested seven models, including GPT-4o, on 32 concepts. The concepts came from three fields: techniques used in literature, game theory and biases in human thinking.

3When asked for definitions, the models were right 94.2 percent of the time. However, even after defining a concept well, they often failed to use it correctly. The paper says these failures appeared across every model and field the team tested.

4In one example, GPT-4o correctly explained the ABAB rhyme pattern, in which the rhymes alternate from line to line. The model was then shown a four-line poem with a blank in the third line. The missing word had to rhyme with "out," the last word of the first line. It suggested "soft," which does not rhyme with "out." Yet when asked whether the two words rhyme, it correctly answered no. When the example was tried again recently, the chatbot passed, Science News Explores reported.

5The researchers argue that tests made for humans, like AP exams, work as valid tests of AI only if AI's mistakes about concepts look like human mistakes. The study tested AI models, not human learners.

6To see whether a model really understood a concept, the team did not stop at definitions. It also asked each model to judge whether examples fit the concept, to create new ones and to edit examples so they would fit or not fit.

本文の the ABAB rhyme pattern, in which the rhymes alternate from line to line は「ABABという韻のふみ方、つまりその中では韻が1行ごとに交互になる形」という意味。in which は where に近い働きをする。
