Snowboarders Lead Japan to a Record Medal Haul

1Japan won a record 24 medals at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, which closed in Verona, Italy, on February 22, 2026. The total of five gold, seven silver and 12 bronze medals broke the previous Winter Games record of 18, set in Beijing in 2022. Japan has now set a new record for total medals at three Winter Games in a row.

2Snowboarding was the biggest source of medals. Japanese snowboarders won nine medals, including four golds, compared with three medals in Beijing. Kira Kimura and Kokomo Murase won the men's and women's big air events, and Yuto Totsuka took the men's halfpipe title. Mari Fukada, 19, won the women's slopestyle with 87.83 points on her third and final run.

3In figure skating, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara won the pairs competition. It was Japan's first Olympic gold medal in the event. Yuma Kagiyama added a silver medal in the men's singles.

4Speed skater Miho Takagi won three bronze medals in Italy. Her bronze medals came in the 500 meters, the 1,000 meters and the team pursuit. That brought her career total to 10 Olympic medals, the most of any Japanese woman at either the Summer or Winter Games.

5Japan's five golds equaled its best total, which it set at the 1998 Nagano Games. In the medal table, Japan finished fifth by total medals and 10th when gold medals are counted first. Seventy years earlier, Japan won its first Winter Olympic medal in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a silver in the men's slalom in 1956.

本文の the previous Winter Games record of 18, set in Beijing in 2022 は「2022年に北京で記録された、これまでの最多18個」。
