The standard explanation

The Sengoku period is Japan's age of civil war, usually dated from the Onin War of 1467 to the end of the sixteenth century. Central authority collapsed, and regional warlords called daimyo fought each other for land. It is the period most foreign fans of samurai stories picture, and it ended when three successive leaders reunified the country.

Sengoku means warring states, a name borrowed from Chinese history, and it describes Japan from roughly 1467 to the end of the sixteenth century. The shogunate in Kyoto still existed on paper, but it could not enforce anything, so regional lords called daimyo governed, taxed and fought on their own account.

Castles moved from mountaintops down onto plains, guns arrived from Europe in the 1540s and changed how battles were fought, and men from ordinary backgrounds could rise by ability, which was almost impossible before or after. The period ends with three men in succession: Oda Nobunaga, who broke the old order, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who completed the unification, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded the government that then kept Japan at peace for over two centuries.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWas the emperor involved in these wars?

Not as a commander. The emperor remained in Kyoto as the source of legitimacy and titles, and warlords sought court rank to strengthen their position, but the court had no armies and little money during this period.

QDid guns really change everything?

They changed tactics quickly. Matchlock guns reached Japan in the 1540s, Japanese smiths copied and improved them, and within decades large formations of gunners were decisive in battle. Castles were redesigned with thick stone bases in response.
