The standard explanation

Senshuraku means the last day of a run of performances. In sumo, it is the 15th and final day of a tournament, when the champion is usually decided and the trophies are handed out. Theaters and concert tours use the same word for their closing show. Japanese people often say "raku" for short, and the first day is called "shonichi."

千秋楽は、続けて行われる興行の最後の日を指します。相撲では15日間ある本場所の最終日で、たいていこの日に優勝が決まり、賞が手渡されます。劇場やコンサートツアーでも、最後の公演を同じように千秋楽と呼びます。略して「楽」と言うことも多く、最初の日は「初日」と呼びます。

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Senshuraku is the word for the final day of a series of performances in Japan. You hear it most often in sumo. A professional sumo tournament lasts 15 days, and the last day is senshuraku. The champion is usually decided that day, and the trophies are handed out after the last bout.

Senshuraku also has its own ritual. The last three bouts of the day are announced with the phrase "kore yori san'yaku," meaning "from here, the top three." The winners receive an arrow, a bowstring, and a bow, and the bow is then used in the bow-twirling ceremony that ends the day.

The same word is used in kabuki, musicals, and concert tours for the closing show, and fans often try to get tickets for it because the performers sometimes add special speeches. The origin of the word is not certain. One theory says it comes from a piece of court music that was traditionally played last. I like that the same word covers both a sumo ring and a theater stage.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is the champion always decided on the last day?

Not always. If one wrestler is far ahead, he can clinch the title a day or two early. If two or more wrestlers are tied after the last day, they fight a playoff on senshuraku.

いつもではありません。一人が大きくリードしていれば、1日か2日早く優勝が決まることもあります。最終日を終えて同じ成績の力士が二人以上いれば、千秋楽に優勝決定戦を行います。

Q

Why do some theaters write it with a different kanji?

The kanji for "autumn" in senshuraku contains the character for "fire." Some theaters are said to replace it with an older form without fire, because fire was the thing theaters feared most.

千秋楽の「秋」という字には「火」が入っています。劇場がいちばん恐れたのは火事だったので、「火」を含まない古い字体の「穐」に置きかえて書くところがある、とされています。
