Dohyo-iri is the ring-entering ceremony held on each day of a sumo tournament. Wrestlers in the top two divisions walk into the ring in kesho-mawashi, or embroidered ceremonial aprons, stand in a circle and perform a short set of movements. A yokozuna, or grand champion, performs his own ceremony alone, wearing a thick white rope around his waist. It is a ritual, not a warm-up.

Before the top wrestlers fight, there is a short ceremony called dohyo-iri, or ring-entering. The wrestlers of each side, east and west, climb into the ring one by one wearing kesho-mawashi, heavy aprons embroidered with dragons, mountains or the names of their supporters.
They stand in a circle, clap, lift the edge of their aprons slightly and raise their arms, then walk off. The most dramatic part is the yokozuna's dohyo-iri. The grand champion performs alone, with one wrestler walking ahead of him and another carrying a sword behind him.
There are two styles, Unryu and Shiranui, which differ mainly in how he holds his arms as he rises from a crouch. I think it is worth arriving early just to see it, because it shows that sumo is a ritual as well as a sport.

QWhat's the difference between the two yokozuna styles?
In the Unryu style, the yokozuna rises with his left hand against his side and his right arm stretched out. In the Shiranui style, he stretches out both arms. The knot of the rope on his back also differs, with one loop for Unryu and two for Shiranui.

QWhy do they wear those decorated aprons?
The kesho-mawashi is only for the ceremony, never for fighting. They are often gifts from supporters' groups, hometowns or companies, and a fine one can be very expensive.
化粧まわしは儀式のためだけのもので、取組では使いません。後援会や出身地、企業から贈られることが多く、上等なものはとても高価です。
QWho are the two wrestlers with the yokozuna?
They are called tsuyuharai, who leads the way, and tachimochi, who carries the sword. They are usually top-division wrestlers, often from the yokozuna's own stable or group of stables.
