The standard explanation
Kabuki began around 1600 and became the popular theater of the merchant class. It is loud, visual and melodramatic, with revolving stages, trapdoors and a walkway running through the audience. All roles are played by men, including the female ones, by specialists called onnagata. Performances are long, but single acts are sold separately for first-time viewers.

Kabuki is Japan's classical popular theater, and it is more approachable than people expect. It began around 1600 with a woman named Izumo no Okuni, who led a troupe of female performers in Kyoto.
Women were banned from the stage a few decades later, and then boys were banned too, which is how kabuki became an all-male form. Female roles are played by specialists called onnagata, who train in them for their whole career. What makes kabuki fun to watch is that it was built for a mass audience.
The stage revolves, actors rise through trapdoors, and there is a walkway running right through the seating so the actor passes among the audience. The audience shouts the actor's house name at key moments. If you want to try it, most theaters sell single-act tickets for a small amount, and English audio guides are available.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhy are all the actors men?
It started with women. In 1629 the shogunate banned women from the kabuki stage, officially for public morals, then banned adolescent boys too. Adult men took over all roles, and the convention stayed after the bans were gone.
QWhat are people shouting?
The actor's house name, called a yago. It is done by trained enthusiasts at exact moments, and shouting at the wrong moment is frowned on, so leave it to them.
QDo I need to understand Japanese?
It helps, but the language is archaic and even Japanese audiences use the guide. English audio guides explain the plot as it happens, and a great deal is carried visually.
