The shortest answer that works
Kumadori is the bold kabuki makeup whose colors and lines announce a character's nature at a glance.

The standard explanation
Kumadori exaggerates the lines of a face with paint to show a character's nature rather than to look realistic. Red lines mark heroes and figures of justice or superhuman strength, while blue or indigo lines mark villains, ghosts and other sinister beings; brown often shades demons or non-human creatures. It is only used in the rougher, more supernatural style of kabuki called aragoto, not in the quieter domestic dramas, so a heavily painted face signals to the audience what kind of story they are about to see.

One of the first things a newcomer notices about kabuki is the makeup, and kumadori is designed to be noticed. Rather than imitating a real face, it exaggerates the lines of muscle, vein and expression with bold color to tell the audience exactly what kind of character they are looking at before a single word is spoken. Red is used for heroes and figures embodying justice, courage or superhuman strength; blue or indigo marks villains, cowards and supernatural, sinister beings; and brown or dark tones often mark demons, spirits and other non-human roles.
The style is traditionally credited to Ichikawa Danjuro I, who is said to have first used it in the late 1600s for a bold warrior role, inspired partly by the exaggerated carved faces of puppet theater. Kumadori appears only in aragoto, the rough, larger-than-life style of kabuki built around supernatural heroes and villains, and never in the quieter, more realistic domestic dramas called sewamono, which is why the presence or absence of the makeup itself already tells you what kind of play you are watching.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QDo all kabuki actors wear kumadori?
No, only actors in aragoto-style roles, the bold supernatural heroes and villains. Actors in the quieter, realistic domestic dramas wear ordinary stage makeup instead, so kumadori marks a specific genre, not kabuki as a whole.
QHow long does it take to apply?
It can take anywhere from thirty minutes to well over an hour, since the actor usually paints his own face using a mirror, following a pattern specific to that role that has been passed down for generations.
QDoes the color pattern ever change for the same role?
The basic color and general shape stay fixed to the role and the acting family performing it, but the exact lines can vary slightly between individual actors and performances, since each face and each family has its own version of the pattern.
