28 Japanese Restaurant Phrases: How to Order, Pay, and Reply to Staff

Eating out in Japan is easier once you know what staff will say to you, because most of the talking follows a script. This page covers both sides: the lines you will hear, and short replies that work. It also covers the konbini counter, where the same few questions come up every time.

📝 Before you start
  • In most places you call a server by raising your hand slightly and saying "sumimasen." Some restaurants have a call button on the table instead.
  • There is generally no tipping in Japan. Leaving extra money on the table often leads staff to chase you down to return it.
  • At many casual places you pay at the register by the exit, not at the table. Take the bill you were given to the front.
  • If you have a serious allergy or dietary rule, carry it written in Japanese. Spoken explanations can be misunderstood, and broth or sauces can contain ingredients you would not expect.
  • Pointing at a menu photo or the plastic food models in the window is completely normal and not rude.
