The shortest answer that works

Naishinten is the school's own running assessment of a student, and it counts toward high school entry.

The standard explanation

Japanese high school entry is not decided by the entrance exam alone. Each junior high school submits a report on the student, and the grades in it, known as the naishinten, are counted alongside the exam. Those grades cover all subjects including music and physical education, and they reflect homework, participation and attitude, not just tests. The weighting and which school years count vary by prefecture.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

One thing that surprises people about Japanese schooling is that the high school entrance exam is not the whole story. Alongside the exam, each junior high school sends the receiving school a report, and the grades in it are called naishinten.

These cover every subject, including art, music and physical education, and they are based on more than test scores: whether homework was handed in, whether the student participated, how they behaved. Depending on the prefecture, they may count only the final year or all three. The effect on daily life is real.

Students know that a teacher's assessment follows them, so there is pressure to be visibly cooperative from the first year of junior high, not just to study hard before the exam. People argue about this. Supporters say it stops a single bad exam day from deciding a child's path and rewards steady effort. Critics say it rewards conformity and gives teachers quiet power over teenagers. Both arguments get made in Japan every year.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QSo a student can fail the exam and still get in?

It works the other way round more often: a strong report can offset a weaker exam day, and a poor report can sink a student who tested well. The exact balance is set by each prefecture and school.

QDoes it include things like club activities?

The report can include records of club activity, student council roles and attendance, though how much weight they carry differs. The numeric grades in the subjects are the main part.

QIs there anything similar for university entry?

University admission has traditionally leaned much more heavily on the exam itself. Some routes, such as recommendation-based admission, use school reports, but the standard route is dominated by test scores.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHJapanese school entry is decided purely by one big exam.

FACTFor high school, the school's own three-year assessment is counted alongside the exam, which is why daily behavior and homework matter so much in junior high.
