The standard explanation
A bento is a single meal packed into a box, with rice on one side and several small dishes on the other. It is designed to be eaten at room temperature, so the cooking is chosen accordingly. People take them to school and work, buy them at convenience stores and station kiosks, and the arrangement inside the box is part of the point.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
A bento is a meal packed into a box, usually rice on one side and several small dishes on the other. The key thing to understand is that it is meant to be eaten cold. Nothing is reheated, so the food is chosen and cooked to taste good at room temperature, which is a real constraint and shapes what goes in.
Bento are everywhere: school lunches, office lunches, convenience stores, and station kiosks where each region sells its own. Then there is the part that surprises people, the character bento, where a parent arranges rice and vegetables into the face of a cartoon character.
That is genuine, but it is also controversial here. It falls almost entirely on mothers, it takes an hour every morning, and there has been a real backlash against schools and other parents expecting it.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhy don't people heat it up?
Bento is built to be eaten cold. Rice is seasoned and cooled so it does not go hard, and fried items are made to stay decent at room temperature. Convenience store bento are the exception and are heated at the till.
QAre character bento really a thing?
Yes, and there are books and competitions for them. But they are a minority practice and increasingly criticized for the pressure they put on parents, almost always mothers.
QWhat is ekiben?
A bento sold at a train station, usually made with local specialties. Buying one before a long train ride is a small ritual in itself, and some stations are known for a single famous box.
