On Mars, nobody says "Happy birthday" at the right time. That was the first thing Takeshi learned when he arrived at the research base. Radio signals between Mars and Earth travel at the speed of light, but the two planets are so far apart that a single message can take anywhere from a few minutes to more than twenty. A conversation is never really a conversation. It's more like sending letters very, very quickly.
Takeshi was an engineer. His job was to repair the machines that made water and oxygen for the base. He was good at it, and he loved the work. But every night, when he looked at the small blue dot in the Martian sky, he thought about his daughter, Nana.
Nana was turning ten in March. On Earth, there would be a party at his parents' house in Nagoya, with a strawberry cake and too many cousins. On Mars, Takeshi would be hundreds of millions of kilometres away.
"Just send a video," said Lena, the base doctor, when he told her about it. "She'll understand." "She will," Takeshi said. "But I want to be there when she blows out the candles. Not twenty minutes later."
Lena thought for a moment. "Then send it twenty minutes early," she said.
It sounded simple, but it wasn't. Takeshi needed to know exactly when the candles would be lit. He wrote to his mother, who wrote back the next day: the cake would come out at exactly 7:30 p.m. Japan time. "Your father will hold the lighter," she added. "He has been practising."
On the day of the party, Takeshi checked the distance between the planets three times. The signal delay was nineteen minutes and forty seconds. He set an alarm, sat in front of the camera and waited. His hands were sweating, which was ridiculous. He had fixed oxygen machines in a dust storm without sweating.
When the alarm rang, he pressed the button and began to sing. He sang "Happy Birthday" badly, to an empty room on another planet, to a party that hadn't started yet. Then he said, "Make a wish, Nana. Now blow!" and he blew too, at nothing.
Then there was nothing to do but wait.
Forty minutes later — twenty for his message to arrive and twenty for the reply to come back — a video appeared on his screen. It showed a dark room, a cake with ten candles, and his daughter's face, glowing orange. On the big TV behind her, Takeshi saw himself, singing badly. Nana was laughing and singing along with him. When the Takeshi on TV said, "Now blow!", she blew, and every candle went out at once.
Everyone in the room cheered. Then Nana looked straight into the camera. "Dad," she said, "you were right on time."
Takeshi watched it eleven times. Then he went outside, found the small blue dot in the sky and, for the first time since he had arrived, didn't feel very far away at all.

Q1. Why can't people on Mars have a normal conversation with people on Earth?
Q2. What was Lena's idea?
Q3. Why did Takeshi feel close to Earth at the end?
