Haruto was seventeen, and it was his first trip abroad. He was staying in London for two weeks with his English class. On Saturday, there were no lessons, so he decided to visit a famous university town by himself.
At the big station, he looked at the boards. There were so many trains and so many platforms. He found one that left at 9:15, jumped on and sat by the window. He was tired, and the seat was soft. Soon he was asleep.
When he woke up, it was almost noon. Outside the window, he could see the sea. "That's strange," he thought. "The university town isn't near the sea." The train stopped at a tiny station, and Haruto got off. He was in the wrong place.
He checked the timetable. The next train back to London was at six o'clock. He had six hours and no plan. He felt worried and a little stupid.
Outside the station, an old woman was walking a small white dog. "You look lost, love," she said. Haruto explained his mistake in slow English. The woman laughed kindly. "Well, you're in the best wrong place in England," she said. "I'm Margaret. Come on, I'll show you around."
Margaret showed him the old harbour, the colourful boats and a little bookshop with a sleeping cat in the window. They ate fish and chips on a bench, and seagulls watched their food. Haruto told her about his family and his school in Japan.
"I went to Japan once," Margaret said. "Fifty years ago. I got lost in Kyoto, and a young girl helped me. She walked with me for an hour to find my hotel. Before she left, she gave me this." From her bag, she took out a small paper crane. It was old and a little yellow.
At the station, before the six o'clock train, Margaret put the crane in Haruto's hand. "It's your turn now," she said. "Give it to the next lost person."
Thirteen years later, Haruto was walking through a busy station in Tokyo. Near the ticket machines, a young traveller with a big backpack was staring at a map. She looked tired, worried and a little stupid. Haruto smiled, put his hand in his pocket and walked over to her.
