Sora is twelve. She lives with her mother in a small apartment in a quiet town. Her bedroom is next to the wall of the apartment next door. ソラは12歳。静かな町の小さなアパートで、お母さんと暮らしています。ソラの部屋は、となりの部屋との壁に面しています。
One evening in April, Sora hears a piano through the wall. Someone is playing a song. It is slow and simple, but there are many wrong notes. Plink. Plonk. Stop. Then the song starts again. 4月のある晩、壁の向こうからピアノの音が聞こえてきます。誰かが曲をひいています。ゆっくりで簡単な曲ですが、まちがった音がたくさんあります。ポロン。ボロン。止まる。そしてまた、曲が最初から始まります。
The next evening, she hears the same song. And the next evening. And the next. Every night at eight o'clock, it is the same song with the same wrong notes. 次の晩も、同じ曲が聞こえます。その次の晩も。そのまた次の晩も。毎晩8時に、同じ曲が、同じまちがいといっしょに聞こえてくるのです。
"Mom, it's so noisy," Sora says. "I can't do my homework." "Be kind," her mother says. "Everybody is a beginner at first." 「お母さん、すごくうるさいよ」とソラは言います。「宿題ができない」。「やさしくしてあげて」とお母さんは言います。「誰だって最初は初心者なのよ」。
Sora puts on her headphones, but she can still hear the piano. Slowly, she starts to know the song. She even hums it in the bath. ソラはヘッドホンをつけますが、それでもピアノは聞こえます。少しずつ、ソラはその曲を覚えていきます。お風呂で鼻歌を歌ってしまうほどです。
In May, the song gets better. In June, there are only two or three wrong notes. Sora listens and thinks, "Come on. You can do it." 5月になると、曲は上手になります。6月には、まちがいは2つか3つだけ。ソラは耳をすませて、「がんばれ。できるよ」と心の中で思います。
Then, one night in July, the piano is perfect. Every note is right, and the song is beautiful. It is the same song, but now it sounds like a different song. Sora stands up and claps her hands. She feels happy, and a little surprised. そして7月のある夜、ピアノは完ぺきでした。音はぜんぶ正しくて、曲はとてもきれいです。同じ曲なのに、まるでちがう曲のように聞こえます。ソラは立ち上がって拍手をします。うれしくて、少しおどろいていました。
The next morning, she meets an old man in the hallway. He has white hair and a big smile. "Good morning," he says. "I'm sorry about the noise. I'm eighty-one, and I started learning the piano this spring." 次の朝、ソラはろうかでおじいさんに会います。白い髪で、にっこりと笑っています。「おはよう」とおじいさんは言います。「うるさくてごめんね。わたしは81歳で、この春ピアノを習い始めたんだよ」。
"Why?" Sora asks. "My wife loves that song," he says. "We heard it on our first date, sixty years ago. Today is her birthday. Last night was my last practice." 「どうしてですか？」とソラはたずねます。「妻があの曲が大好きでね」とおじいさんは言います。「60年前、はじめてのデートで聞いた曲なんだ。今日は妻の誕生日。昨日の夜が最後の練習だったんだよ」。
That evening at eight o'clock, Sora hears the song again. This time, she also hears a woman laughing and clapping. Sora smiles, opens her window and hums along. その晩8時、ソラはまたあの曲を聞きます。今度は、女の人が笑いながら拍手する音も聞こえます。ソラはほほえんで窓をあけ、曲に合わせて鼻歌を歌います。
