Aya joined the library committee in her second year of high school, mainly because the library was the quietest room in the building. Her job was simple: stamp the books, put them back on the shelves and make sure nobody ate snacks near the old encyclopedias.
One rainy afternoon in June, she was returning a dusty old novel to the shelf when a small piece of paper fell out. The handwriting was neat and round. It said: "If you enjoyed this, try page 43 of The Lighthouse Keeper." 6月の雨の午後、ほこりをかぶった古い小説を棚に戻していると、小さな紙切れがひらりと落ちました。
Aya was curious. She found The Lighthouse Keeper on the bottom shelf, its cover faded by years of sunlight. On page 43, there was another note: "Good. Now go to the poetry section. Third book from the left, the one with the green cover."
It was a treasure hunt. Every day after school, Aya followed the notes from book to book — from poetry to history, from history to a cookbook, from the cookbook to a science fiction story about a girl who lived on the moon. Some notes were funny. Some were encouraging. One said, "Don't worry if you don't have many friends yet. Books are patient. People are too, eventually."
Aya read that one three times. She hadn't told anyone, but she still ate lunch alone most days.
Who had written these notes? The paper was yellow, and the ink had faded, so they were clearly old. Aya started to imagine the writer: a lonely student, maybe, or a teacher who had retired long ago.
After three weeks, the trail led to the very back of the library, to a heavy book about birds that nobody had borrowed since 1991, according to the card inside. The last note was tucked between two pages about owls.
"You found me! Thank you for following all the way. I hope this library is still a happy place, and I hope you are happy here too.
M.K. Aya stared at the initials. Then she slowly turned around and looked at the front desk, where the librarian, Ms. Kato, was quietly repairing a torn book. Ms. Kato. Michiko Kato. Her name was on the badge she wore every day. M.K.。
Aya walked to the desk and placed the note in front of her. Ms. Kato looked at it for a long moment. Then she laughed — a surprised, young-sounding laugh that Aya had never heard before.
"I was sixteen," she said. "I didn't have many friends, so I spent every lunch break in here. I always wondered if anyone would find them." She was quiet for a moment. "You're the first. It took thirty-seven years."
Then Ms. Kato opened a drawer, took out a pen and a small pile of blank cards, and pushed them across the desk to Aya. "Your turn," she said.
