Every Friday for sixteen years, Mio's grandmother made curry. It was the best curry in the world — everyone in the family agreed. Mio's grandfather always said the same thing after the first bite: "Your grandmother has magic hands." 16年間、毎週金曜日になると、ミオのおばあちゃんはカレーを作ってくれました。
Then, in October, Grandma fell on the stairs and broke her leg. She had to stay in the hospital for two months. The house felt quiet, and Friday nights felt empty. Grandpa didn't say much. He just ate his convenience store dinners and watched TV.
"I'll make Grandma's curry," Mio decided. She was sixteen, and she had watched her grandmother cook many times. How difficult could it be?
On Friday, she cut the onions, carrots and potatoes. She cooked the meat and added the curry roux. It smelled good. It looked good. But when Grandpa tasted it, he smiled politely and said, "It's very nice, Mio." Mio knew what that meant. It was not Grandma's curry.
The next Friday, she tried again. She cooked the onions for longer. She added more salt. Then less salt. Still, something was missing.
On Sunday, Mio visited the hospital. "Grandma," she whispered, "what's the secret of your curry?" Her grandmother looked at the door. Grandpa was outside, buying a drink. She moved closer to Mio and spoke very quietly.
"One piece of dark chocolate," she said, "and one spoonful of instant coffee. That's all." Mio's mouth fell open. "That's it? But Grandpa says you have magic hands!" Her grandmother laughed. "For fifty years, he has believed in my magic. Please don't tell him. A little magic is good for a marriage."
The next Friday, Mio made the curry again — with one piece of chocolate and one spoonful of coffee. Grandpa took a bite. Then he stopped. He took another bite, and his eyes became a little wet.
"This is it," he said. "This is your grandmother's curry. How did you do it?" Mio thought about her promise. She smiled and held up her hands. "Magic," she said.
