fun はもともと名詞なので、伝統的には more fun / the most fun を使います。
逆に real, wrong は1音節でも more real, more wrong が普通です。
The lake is deepest here.(この湖はここがいちばん深い)は、ほかの湖ではなく同じ湖の場所どうしを比べています。
Q5「3倍大きい」は three times bigger than と言っていい?
ネイティブは three times as big as と three times bigger than をほぼ同じ意味で使います。ただし2倍は twice as big as が普通で、twice bigger than はあまり使われません。
| 子音+y(y→i) | easy / happy / early | easier / happier / earlier | easiest / happiest / earliest |
| 長い語(2音節の多く・3音節以上) | useful / beautiful | more useful / more beautiful | most useful / most beautiful |
| -ly の副詞(early は例外) | slowly / carefully | more slowly / more carefully | most slowly / most carefully |
|---|---|---|---|
| good / well | better | best | 「良い」も「上手に」も同じ変身 |
| many / much | more | most | 数でも量でも more |
| old | older / elder | oldest / eldest | elder
| late | later / latter | latest / last | later・latest=時間、latter・last=順番 |
問題文に of the two とあれば比較級、of the three / of all / in the class とあれば最上級、と数で決まります。
- This question is easier than the last one.
- My new phone is more expensive than my old one.
- Emma plays the guitar better than I do.
(well(上手に)の比較級も better) - August is the hottest month of the year here.
✕ more taller / ✕ most happiest
This math problem is ( ) than the one we did yesterday.
more easy は✕。
動く図解時間軸・変形・イメージ図がアニメーションで動きますアプリで見るKenS isV as副詞 tallC as接続詞 his fatherS (is)V.
Ken is as tall as his father. これが not as ~ as の正体です。
This bag is as light as a feather.
This bag is not so heavy as it looks.
- I can't run as fast as my brother.
(動詞 run を修飾するので副詞 fast) - Emma speaks English as fluently as her teacher (does).
- The test wasn't as difficult as I expected.
(as の後ろに S V がそのまま来る例) - My room is as large as yours.
(yours=your room)
be動詞・look・become なら形容詞(as happy as)、一般動詞を修飾するなら副詞(as happily as / as fast as)。as ~ as を消した文(She sings _.)
I have as many comics as Ken. / She has as much money as I do. many は数えられる名詞、much は数えられない名詞。
形容詞+a+名詞 を as で挟むときは as + 形容詞 + a + 名詞 + as の語順。She is as good a player as her sister. so / too / how も同じ語順(so good a player / too big a risk / how good a player)になる「アソトハウ語順」です。
He is as tall as I (am).
Emma can speak French as ( ) as her teacher.
as ~ as を外すと Emma can speak French ___. as と as の間は原級なので more / most は✕。
twice(2倍)、three times(3倍)、half(半分)、one third(3分の1)、two thirds(3分の2)。
動く図解グラフが伸びるアニメーションアプリで見るYuki's roomS isV three times倍数 as largeC as Ken'sM.
| as ~ as 型 | the + 名詞 + of 型 | 意味 |
|---|---|---|
| three times as large as A | three times the size of A | Aの3倍の大きさ |
| twice as long as A | twice the length of A | Aの2倍の長さ |
| twice as heavy as A | twice the weight of A | Aの2倍の重さ |
| twice as old as A | twice the age of A | Aの2倍の年齢 |
| three times as high as A | three times the height of A | Aの3倍の高さ |
size / length / weight / age / height が「名詞版」。数(人数など)は twice as many people as A の形がふつう
✕ as twice large as は語順ミス。 3倍以上は three times, four times …
作文では誤解のない three times as large as か three times the size of を使いましょう。
「できるだけ〜」は as ~ as possible か as ~ as S can。
- Please reply as soon as possible.
- I ran as fast as I could to catch the last train.
(過去なので could) - Our gym is twice the size of the one at my old school.
- This battery lasts half as long as the new one.
She studied as hard as possible. → She studied as hard as she could.
先生one third as ~ as。
生徒じゃあ「10倍」は ten times as ~ as で、「10倍の大きさ」は ten times the size of?
My new bag is ( ) my old one.
倍数は1つ目の as の前:twice as heavy as。
04原級の慣用表現:as many as から as ~ as ever lived まで 応用
|---|---|---|
| as many as + 数 | 〜も(数が多いという驚き) | As many as 500 fans came. |
| as much as + 量 | 〜も(量が多いという驚き) | It cost as much as 30,000 yen. |
| as few as / as little as | たった〜(少ないという気持ち) | as few as ten people |
| as early as | 早くも〜に | as early as the 8th century |
| as good as | 〜も同然(almost) | The work is as good as finished. |
| as ~ as any + 名詞 | どの〜にも劣らず | She is as kind as any girl in our class. |
| as ~ as ever lived | 古今まれな・史上最高クラスの | He was as great a pianist as ever lived. |
| as ~ as ever | 相変わらず〜 | She is as busy as ever. |
| not so much A as B | AというよりむしろB | He is not so much a singer as an actor. |
| not so much as + 動詞 | 〜さえしない | He did not so much as say hello. |
| without so much as ~ing | 〜さえしないで | She left without so much as saying goodbye. |
not so much の2つは入試の大好物
as many as は「数字の前」で強調になる
As many as 500 fans came. 数字の直前の as many as / as much as は「多いね!」 逆に as few as / as little as は「たった〜」。
- As many as 3,000 people signed the petition in one day.
- The new game is as good as sold out.
- Emma is as hardworking as any student in our class.
- Ken is as cheerful as ever.
Ken
He is not so much a teacher as a friend to us.
without so much as ~ing
He did not so much as look at me.
not so much A as B = B rather than A = less A than B = more B than A。
not so much A as B は「Aじゃなくて B の勝ち」。
as ~ as ever lived He was as great a pianist as ever lived. の語順(as + 形容詞 + a + 名詞 + as)も要注意。
as long as(〜する限り・〜しさえすれば:条件)、as far as(〜する範囲では)は接続詞としての慣用句。
The job is as good as finished.
He left the party without so much as ( ) goodbye to anyone.
without so much as ~ing
Emma is not so much a singer ( ) an actress.
not so much A as B「AというよりむしろB」。not A but B と混ぜた but は✕。
He is taller than I (am).
very は「とても」で、原級(very tall)専用。比較級の「差」を強めるのは much / far / a lot / even / still です。 ※very much なら比較級を強められる(very much better)。
|---|---|---|
| much / far / a lot | ずっと・はるかに(差が大きい) | much taller / far better / a lot cheaper |
| way(口語) | めちゃくちゃ(差が大きい) | way more fun |
| even / still | さらに・いっそう(もともと〜なのに、もっと) | even colder than yesterday |
| a little / a bit / slightly | 少し | a little older |
| ✕ very | very 単独では比較級に使えない(very much なら可) | ✕ very taller |
Ken is tall, but his brother is even taller.
My brother is much taller than me.
数えられる名詞 なら many more books、数えられない名詞 なら much more money。
more books の more は many の比較級。 much more books は「much と many の取り違え」。
less + 原級 は「より少なく〜」= not as ~ as。This test was less difficult than the last one.(前ほど難しくなかった)。数えられる名詞には本来 fewer(fewer mistakes)、数えられない名詞に less(less time)を使います。
差 + 比較級(three years older)か、比較級 + by + 差(older by three years)。
This phone is much lighter than my old one.
- It's cold today, but it will be even colder tomorrow.
- My sister is three years older than I am.
- Our team lost by two points.
(差の by は比較級以外でも使う) - I made fewer mistakes than last time.
差を測るのは much(量)や far(距離)など、量や距離の語。
My brother is ( ) taller than I am.
very は原級専用、more taller は二重比較、most は最上級。
①the 比較級 of the two(2つのうちで〜なほう)②the 比較級 ~, the 比較級 …(〜すればするほど…)③all the 比較級 for / because ~(〜だからそのぶんいっそう)と none the 比較級 for ~(〜だからといって少しも…
- Emma is the taller of the two sisters.
You read many books. / You learn many words.
- 比べる語を比較級に:many books → more books / many words → more words
- the をつけて、比較級(+名詞)をまるごと節の先頭へ:the more books / the more words
The more books you read, the more words you learn.
- The more books you read, the more words you learn.
(the more books でひとかたまり) - The older we grow, the weaker our memory becomes.
- The sooner, the better.
It's getting colder and colder. more 型は more and more interesting(✕ more interesting and more interesting)。
all the 比較級 for 名詞 / because S V は「〜だから、そのぶんだけいっそう…」。
|---|---|---|
| all the 比較級 for 名詞 | 〜のためにいっそう… | I like him all the better for his honesty. |
| all the 比較級 because S V | 〜なのでいっそう… | I studied all the harder because I had failed once. |
ない | He is none the wiser for his mistakes. |
| none the worse for 名詞 | 〜でも少しも悪くなっていない(無事だ) | The car was none the worse for the crash. |
| so much the better | それならなおさらいい | If it's free, so much the better. |
the more, the better all the better for ~ は「〜の分だけいっそう良く」。
the more ~, the better …
確認問題 ( ) you study, the better your grades will be.
後半が the better なので「the 比較級 ~, the 比較級 …」。
superior(〜より優れた)などは、もともとラテン語の比較級。
|---|---|---|
| be superior to A | Aより優れている | This model is far superior to the old one. |
| be inferior to A | Aより劣っている | Cheap earphones are often inferior to expensive ones. |
| be senior to A | Aより年上・地位が上 | She is two years senior to me. |
| be junior to A | Aより年下・地位が下 | He is junior to me in the club. |
| prior to A | Aより前に | Please arrive prior to the meeting. |
| prefer A to B | BよりAを好む | I prefer tea to coffee. |
| be preferable to A | Aより好ましい | Walking is preferable to driving here. |
than も✕で to。
- She is my senior by two years.
(= She is two years senior to me. = She is two years older than me.) - I prefer walking to taking the bus.
(prefer A to B の A と B は同じ形(動名詞どうし)) - I prefer to walk rather than take the bus.
(不定詞なら prefer to do rather than (to) do)
The population of Tokyo is larger than Osaka.
The populationS of TokyoM isV largerC than that of OsakaM.
that = the population。
The climate of Tokyo is milder than that of Sapporo.
those = the ears。
The ears of a rabbit are longer than those of a cat.
My bike is newer than Ken's.(Ken's = Ken's bike)。
人口 vs 都市、耳 vs 猫、自転車 vs 人ならアウト → that of / those of / 's を入れる。
英語にも apples and oranges(比べられないもの同士)という言い方がある。
The price of this laptop is higher than ( ) of that one.
the price(単数)のくり返しなので that of。
My hair is longer than ( ).
「私の髪」と「姉の髪」を比べるので my sister's(=my sister's hair)。 that of my sister's は of と 's が二重。
08最上級:the + 最上級 + in / of、強調、「〜でさえ」 標準
基本は the + 最上級 + in / of ~。
|---|---|
| in Japan / in the world | of the three / of the four |
| in my class / in our team | of all (the students) |
| in my family | of the four seasons |
| in this town | of us / of them |
後ろの名詞が「1つの入れ物」(class, Japan, team)なら in、「複数の中身」(the three, all, us)なら of。 ※ただし the hottest month of the year / the best day of my life のように「期間」は of が定番。
one of the + 最上級 + 複数名詞
「最も〜なものの1つ」は one of the best players。 ✕ one of the best player。
最上級の強調は by far / much / the very。by far the best(断トツで1位)、the very best(まさに最高の)。very は「the very + 最上級」の語順でだけ使えます。
- This is by far the best ramen in town.
- She is the very best player on our team.
- It was one of the most exciting games I've ever seen.
- The richest man in the world cannot buy time.
The wisest man can make mistakes.
The lake is deepest at this point.(この湖はこの地点でいちばん深い)②副詞の最上級は the を省略可:Ken runs (the) fastest in our class. ③所有格:my best friend ④a most / most = very:a most beautiful view(とても美しい景色)。
This is the most beautiful view in Japan.
very と同じ)。
It was a most beautiful sunset.
Most students(たいていの生徒)、Most of the students(その生徒たちの大部分)。the がつく特定集団なら most of が必要。✕ Most of students は入試頻出のワナ。
Yuki is the fastest runner ( ) all the members.
all the members は「複数の中身」なので of。in は in the team のような「入れ物」に使う。
09原級・比較級で「最上級の意味」を出す+at best / make the most of 応用

| Nothing is 比較級 than A | Nothing is more important than health. |
| Nothing is as 原級 as A | Nothing is as important as health. |
| A is 比較級 than anything else | Health is more important than anything else. |
| 人なら nobody / anyone else | Nobody in our class runs faster than Ken. / Ken runs faster than anyone else in our class. |
主語が「物」なら nothing / anything else、「人」なら nobody (no one) / anyone else
any other / no other の直後は 単数名詞。
This is the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. = I have never seen a more beautiful sunset (than this). = I have never seen such a beautiful sunset.

10no more than 4兄弟・much less・know better than to 難関
数字の前の no more than / no less than / not more than / not less than。
|---|---|---|---|
| no more than 3 | only 3 | たった3 | 少ない! |
| no less than 3 | as many (much) as 3 | 3も | 多い! |
| not more than 3 | at most 3 | 多くても3(3以下) | 上限を言うだけ |
| not less than 3 | at least 3 | 少なくとも3(3以上) | 下限を言うだけ |
no = 差ゼロ+気持ち、not = 範囲
なぜ no more than が「たった」になるのか
no more than 1,000 yen
no more / no less not more / not less no はノリ、not は数学。
- The concert ticket cost no more than 1,000 yen.
- She has no less than five cats.
(数えられる名詞には no fewer than も使える) - Not more than 30 people can join the tour.
- You need not less than 60 points to pass.
Answer in no more than 50 words.(50語以内で答えよ)がその代表。
I can't ride a bike, much less drive a car.(自転車にも乗れない、ましてや車の運転なんて)。
know better than to do は「〜するほど愚かではない」。 You should know better than to use your phone while walking.(歩きスマホなんてしないくらいの分別はあるはずだ)。
more or less は「だいたい・ほぼ」。no longer = not ~ any longer = not ~ any more は「もはや〜ない」。I no longer live in Osaka. = I don't live in Osaka any longer.
|---|---|---|
| much less / still less | (否定の後で)ましてや〜ない | He can't read hiragana, much less kanji. |
| let alone | ましてや〜ない(同上) | I don't have time to eat, let alone cook. |
| know better than to do | 〜するほど愚かではない | I know better than to trust him. |
| more or less | だいたい・多かれ少なかれ | The work is more or less finished. |
| no longer / not ~ any longer | もはや〜ない | He is no longer a child. |
| sooner or later | 遅かれ早かれ | Sooner or later, you'll understand. |
The ticket cost me ( ) 500 yen. It was a real bargain!
bargain(お買い得)なので「たった500円」= no more than。no less than は「500円も」。 as many as は数えられる名詞用で、お金なら as much as。
A is no more B than C is D 難関
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
A whaleS isV no moreM a fishC than a horse is (a fish)M.
- no more ~ than の文を見つけたら、than の後ろ(C is D)を確認する
A is not B any more than C is D. / A is not B, just as C is not D.
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
A whale is no less a mammal than a horse is.
- I am no more a genius than you are.
- You can no more master English without practice than you can learn to swim without getting wet.
- A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is.
(no more = not ~ any more の分解形) - Emma is no less talented than her sister (is).
Emma
than a horse is no more ~ than を見たら、than の後ろにも 心の中で not を入れて訳す。
no more than a child
no more = ✕✕、no less = ○○。
A bat is no more a bird than a mouse is.
no more ~ than はくじらの構文。

同じ人の2つの性質を比べる more A than B
Ken is more shy than rude.。 ✕ shyer than rude。
- Ken is more shy than rude.
- The story was more sad than scary.
- Her success was due more to hard work than to luck.
the last ~ to do は「最も〜しそうにない」。He is the last person to break a promise.
I love my dog as much as my sister. はっきりさせたいときは as my sister does(①)/ as I love my sister(②)と動詞まで書きます。
IS loveV my dogO as muchM as接続詞 my sisterS (does)V.
IS loveV my dogO as muchM as接続詞 (I)S (love)V my sisterO.
I couldn't agree more. It couldn't be better. Nothing could be further from the truth.
More than one student has asked me about it.(1人ではなく何人もの生徒が尋ねてきた)。
than expected(予想より)、than usual(いつもより)、than necessary(必要以上に)、than ever(これまでになく)。The exam was easier than (I had) expected.
the best possible way(考えうる最高の方法)のように、最上級の後に possible / imaginable を置くと「ありうる限りの」と強まります。the best way possible
Ken is more ( ) than rude; he just doesn't talk much.
同じ人物の2つの性質を比べる more A than B。A も B も原級のまま:more shy than rude。
How's your new part-time job?" "It ( ) be better. I love it!"
It couldn't be better.「これ以上良くなりようがない」=最高。

倍数(twice / three times / half)は必ず1つ目の as の前。選択肢に as twice ~ as や twice ~er as があれば即消去。
three times as large as(○) / as three times large as(✕)
比較級は much / far / even / still / a lot、最上級は by far / much / the very。
much taller(○) / very taller(✕)
more の後ろに数えられる名詞の複数形 → many more、数えられない名詞 → much more、名詞なし(形容詞・副詞)→ much more。
なぜ効く? more books の more は many の比較級、more money の more は much の比較級。
many more books / much more money / much more difficult
the more difficult it is / the more books you read。
how difficult it is と同じ語順になる。
The more difficult the question is, the harder I try.
違えば that of / those of / 所有格's が抜けている。
The ears of a rabbit are longer than those of a cat.
superior / inferior / senior / junior / prior の後は to。 prefer A to B
far superior to the old model
比較級 + than any other +単数名詞 / No other +単数名詞 + is。
higher than any other mountain in Japan
no more than = only(たった)、no less than = as many / much as(〜も)、not more than = at most(〜以下)、not less than = at least(〜以上)。
no more than 500 yen = only 500 yen
no more A than B の B がありえない内容なら、A も B も否定で訳す。
I am no more a genius than you are.(あなた同様、私も天才ではない)
more shy than rude。
Ken is more shy than rude. = Ken is shy rather than rude.
I ran as fast as possible. → I ran as fast as I could.

much, far, even, still, a lot
twice / three times / half は as ~ as の門の外に立つ見張り番。
the more, the better =「その分多く、その分良く」。all the better for ~ =「〜の分だけいっそう」。
superior / inferior / senior / junior / prior の5語は -or で終わる比較語で、後ろは to。
no more は「たった!」、no less は「〜も!」 not more は「以下」、not less は「以上」と冷静な範囲。
no more ~ than は両方否定。
rather than で言いかえるときは B rather than A と順番が逆になるので注意。

as ~ as の1つ目の as と2つ目の as は、何が違うんですか?
not as ~ as が「同じではない」じゃなくて「〜ほど…
Ken is not as tall as his father.
入試の4択では後ろに動詞があるなら主格(than I do)、英作文では than I am / than I do と動詞まで書くのが一番安全です。
①「2つのうち〜なほう」と1つに決まるとき(the taller of the two)②the 比較級 ~, the 比較級 …(〜すればするほど)③all the 比較級 for / none the 比較級 for(その分だけ)。
A is not B any more than C is D. や just as C is not D の形のほうが自然なことも多いです。
The lake is deepest here. また a most beautiful view の most は「とても」の意味で、比べていないので the ではなく a がつきます。
prefer A to B の to は前置詞?
prefer A to B の to は前置詞です。 一方「〜するほうが好き」を不定詞で言うなら prefer to walk rather than (to) drive。
tall → taller → tallest、fast → faster → fastest。 bad → worse → worst、many → more → most、little → less → least も同じ。
この bet- の仲間は、to boot(おまけに・そのうえ)という熟語の boot(利益・足し)とつながっていると説明されます。
bonus(ボーナス=良いもの)、optimist(楽観主義者)、optimum(最適)といった英単語は、この変化表のかけらです。
The new stadium is three times larger than the old one.
日常の英語では three times larger than = three times as large as として使われるのがふつうで、ほとんどの場面で問題は起きません。
逆に、1.5倍のようなハンパな倍数は one and a half times as large as と言えます。
倍数は「倍数+as ~ as」か「倍数+the 名詞 of」が正解。twice as many / three times the size of
Whiter teeth! Now with more flavor! Faster than ever!
than we used to be、than before、than other brands……
The exam was easier than expected. なら than I had expected、Prices are higher than last year. なら than they were last year。
