前置詞は日本語の訳ではなく「イメージ（絵）」で覚える。基本の20個を、文字の図と例文で一気に。

まずはこの3つ

  1. at＝点、on＝くっついている、in＝囲まれた中
  2. to＝着く所まで、for＝向かう方向、from＝出発点
  3. 前置詞の後ろは名詞か -ing（✕ before eat → before eating）
前置詞は「絵」で覚える

on を「〜の上に」とだけ覚えると、a picture on the wall（壁に掛かった絵）や on Sunday が説明できない。on の基本イメージは「くっついている」。上でも横でも下でも、表面に接していれば on が使える。1つのイメージから、場所・時・そのほかの使い方へ広がっていくと考えると、丸暗記が減る。

コアイメージ：at・on・in

at 「点」でピンポイント at the station at 7:00 ／ at the door on 「接触」してくっつく on the table ／ on the wall on Monday（その日に乗る） in 「空間・範囲の中」 in the room ／ in Tokyo in April ／ in 2027（期間の中）
点（at）→面（on）→空間（in）と広がる。

場所と時の基本3つ（3）3

  1. 1at ＝ ●（点）
    地図の上の1点、時計の1点。場所（at the station・at home）と時刻（at seven・at noon）。
    Let's meet at the station at three.3時に駅で会おう。
  2. 2on ＝ ●▁（接触）
    表面にくっついている。上でも横でも on。日付・曜日も「カレンダーのマスに乗る」と考えて on（on Sunday・on May 5）。
    There is a calendar on the wall.壁にカレンダーが掛かっている。
  3. 3in ＝ [ ● ]（中）
    囲まれた空間の中。部屋・町・国（in Japan）、幅のある時間（in April・in 2030・in summer）。
    My birthday is in May.私の誕生日は5月だ。

動きと方向の7つ（7）7

  1. 1to ＝ ○→●（到着点）
    行き先に「着く」所まで。go to school・from 9 to 5（9時から5時まで）。
    I sent an email to my teacher.先生にメールを送った。
  2. 2for ＝ ○→（方向・ため）
    向かう方向（着くかは言わない）。そこから「〜のために」、「〜の間（期間）」。leave for Tokyo（東京に向けて出発する）。
    I bought this for you.これはあなたのために買った。
    I stayed in Hawaii for a week.ハワイに1週間いた。
  3. 3from ＝ ●→○（出発点）
    動き・時間の始まる所。from Tokyo・from Monday。出身も from。
    This letter is from my grandmother.この手紙は祖母からだ。
  4. 4into ＝ →[ ]（外から中へ）
    in＋to。外から中へ入る動き。変化（〜に変わる）にも使う：turn into 〜。
    He jumped into the pool.彼はプールに飛び込んだ。
  5. 5through ＝ →[→]→（通り抜け）
    トンネルや森の中を通って、向こう側へ抜ける。
    The train went through a long tunnel.電車は長いトンネルを通り抜けた。
  6. 6across ＝ ⇥（横切って）
    道・川などの平面を、こちら側から向こう側へ。「向こう側に」の意味にもなる。
    We walked across the bridge.私たちは橋を歩いて渡った。
    The bank is across the street.銀行は通りの向こう側にある。
  7. 7along ＝ ═→（〜に沿って）
    川・道など細長い物に沿って進む。
    We walked along the river.私たちは川沿いを歩いた。

位置の4つ（4）4

  1. 1over ＝ ⌒（上をおおう・越える）
    離れて上に（上をおおうように）、または上を越えて向こうへ。数が「〜を超えて」も over（over 100 people）。
    A plane flew over our house.飛行機が家の上を飛んでいった。
  2. 2under ＝ ▁●（下に）
    〜の下に。数が「〜未満」も under（children under six＝6歳未満の子ども）。
    The cat is sleeping under the table.ネコがテーブルの下で寝ている。
  3. 3between ＝ ●○●（2つの間）
    2つの物・人の間。between A and B の形が多い。※3つ以上でも1つずつ区別する時は between。
    Please sit between Ken and me.ケンと私の間に座って。
  4. 4among ＝ ●●○●●（3つ以上の中）
    3つ以上の物・人の集まりに囲まれて。「〜の間で（人気だ）」もこれ。
    This song is popular among students.この歌は生徒の間で人気だ。

時の前後の2つ（2）2

  1. 1after ＝ ●｜→（その後）
    ある時より後。after school（放課後）・after dinner。
    Let's play soccer after school.放課後サッカーをしよう。
  2. 2before ＝ ←｜●（その前）
    ある時より前。場所の「〜の前に」はふつう in front of を使う。
    Wash your hands before eating.食べる前に手を洗って。

関係を表す4つ（4）4

  1. 1of ＝ ●∈○（一部・所属）
    全体の一部、何かに属するもの。one of 〜（〜の1つ）・a member of 〜・a cup of tea。
    He is one of my best friends.彼は私の親友の1人だ。
  2. 2with ＝ ●＋○（いっしょ・道具）
    いっしょに。そこから道具（〜を使って）、持っている（〜のある）。a girl with long hair（髪の長い女の子）。
    Cut the cake with this knife.このナイフでケーキを切って。
  3. 3by ＝ ●｜○（すぐそば）
    そばに（by the window）。そこから手段（by bus）、期限（by five＝5時までに）、受け身の「〜によって」。
    Please finish it by Friday.金曜日までに終わらせて。
  4. 4about ＝ ○●○（まわり）
    あるものの周り。そこから「〜について」、数の「約〜」（about ten minutes）。
    We talked about our future.私たちは将来について話した。
