Many parents believe that the best way to get children to read is to reward them with money or prizes. It is true that rewards can increase the number of books children borrow from the library, at least for a while. However, research suggests that such rewards may actually reduce children's interest in reading itself. When the prizes stop, many children stop reading, because they have learned to see books as a way to earn something rather than as a source of pleasure. For example, in one program, students who had been paid for each book they finished read less in the following year than students who had received nothing. In short, if we want children to become lifelong readers, we should help them discover that reading is enjoyable in itself.

In the past, most people bought music on CDs; today, many listen to songs through streaming services. Some critics argue that this change has hurt musicians, since each stream pays only a tiny amount. I disagree. Streaming has made it possible for unknown artists to reach listeners around the world without the help of a record company. Whereas a CD had to be produced and shipped to shops, a song can now be shared online the day it is recorded. Of course, a few popular artists still earn most of the money. Still, the new system gives far more musicians a chance to be heard.

(A) Every year, huge amounts of food are thrown away by supermarkets and restaurants, even though much of it is still safe to eat. (B) So why does so much good food end up in the trash? The main reason is that shops are afraid of selling anything that looks less than perfect. Customers tend to choose the freshest-looking items, and stores worry about complaints. (C) In France, for instance, large supermarkets must offer unsold food that is still edible to charities rather than throw it away. (D) Thus, the problem of food waste can be reduced if businesses and governments work together to change how unsold food is handled.
