名詞＋that 〜 は「同格」か「関係代名詞」か。後ろが完全か不完全かでまず見抜く。同格の of・カンマの同格まで。

まずはこの3つ

  1. 名詞＋that＋完全な文→同格（〜という）
  2. 名詞＋that＋名詞が欠けた文→関係代名詞（which に替えられる）
  3. 同格の that をとるのは fact・news・idea など「内容」を持つ名詞
見分けの基本：that の後ろを見る

the fact that he lied（彼がうそをついたという事実）は that の後ろが S＋V で完全→同格。the fact that he mentioned（彼が述べた事実）は mention の目的語が欠けて不完全→関係代名詞。同格の that は「名詞の中身」を説明し、関係代名詞は名詞をしぼり込む。※the day that he left（関係副詞の that）のように、時・理由の名詞は後ろが完全でも同格ではない。

同格の that の基本ルール5

  1. 1後ろは完全な文
    同格の that は接続詞なので、後ろの文に欠けた要素がない。「〜という（名詞）」と訳す。
    There is no doubt that he is innocent.彼が無実であることに疑いはない。
  2. 2which には替えられない
    関係代名詞の that はたいてい which・who に替えられるが、同格の that は替えられない。替えて意味が通るかが確認法。
    The rumor that he will resign is spreading.彼が辞任するといううわさが広まっている。
  3. 3that は原則省略しない
    目的格の関係代名詞は省略できるが、同格の that は書き言葉では残すのが原則。※口語では省略されることもある。
  4. 4名詞と that 節が離れる
    主語が長くなるのを避けて、同格節が動詞の後ろに回ることがある。読解で見落としやすい。
    The news came that the team had won.チームが勝ったという知らせが届いた。
  5. 5提案系の名詞は原形
    suggestion・proposal・demand・request・recommendation の同格節は（should）＋原形。動詞 suggest と同じルール。
    They rejected the proposal that the meeting (should) be postponed.会議を延期するという提案は却下された。

同格か関係代名詞か：比べて覚える

同じ名詞でも、後ろの形で that の正体が変わる。

  1. 1同格の of
    A of B＝BというA。the city of Kyoto（京都という都市）、the habit of getting up early（早起きの習慣）。habit・dream などは of -ing が自然。
    She gave up the idea of studying abroad.彼女は留学するという考えをあきらめた。
    ✕the habit that I get up early → the habit of getting up early
  2. 2to V で同格を表す名詞
    decision・plan・attempt・ability・desire・opportunity は to V で中身を言う。opportunity は同格の that 節をとらない。
    I had an opportunity to talk with the author.その作家と話す機会があった。
  3. 3chance to V と chance that
    chance to V＝主に〜する機会、chance that S V＝〜する見込み・可能性。※chance to win（勝つ見込み）のように可能性の意味もある。
    There is a good chance that it will rain.雨が降る可能性が高い。
  4. 4名詞＋疑問詞・whether
    question・problem・idea は whether 節・疑問詞節を同格にとる。the question (of) whether 〜（〜かどうかという問題）。
    I have no idea where he went.彼がどこへ行ったのか全然わからない。
  5. 5カンマ・ダッシュ・コロン
    名詞を言いかえて並べる：Mr. Sato, our teacher, 〜／one thing: honesty。or・that is・namely も「すなわち」の同格。
    He studies entomology, or the science of insects.彼は昆虫学、すなわち昆虫の科学を研究している。
  6. 6A of a B＝AのようなB
    an angel of a girl（天使のような少女）、a mountain of a wave（山のような大波）。A で B をたとえる。上位校の読解で出る。
    He lives in a palace of a house.彼は宮殿のような家に住んでいる。

that 節の正体、全部見分ける

that が出てきたら、前と後ろの2か所を見る。

動詞＋that 〜（I know that 〜）完全名詞節の接続詞
名詞＋that 〜完全同格の接続詞
名詞＋that 〜不完全関係代名詞
It is 形容詞 that 〜完全形式主語の it
It is 名詞・副詞 that 〜外すと完全強調構文
so 〜 that ／ such 〜 that完全結果（とても〜なので）

    後ろが完全→同格。which は使えない
  • ✕This is the fact what everyone knows.

  • ✕I had an opportunity that I met the author.
    ○I had an opportunity to meet the author.
    opportunity は to V で中身を言う
  • ✕She has a habit that she bites her nails.
    ○She has a habit of biting her nails.
    habit は同格の that ではなく of -ing
  • ✕He made a suggestion that we went home.
    ○He made a suggestion that we (should) go home.
