Why Ask Questions Without Final Answers?

Many people think that a question is useful only when it has a clear answer. If we ask how far it is from one town to another, we can measure the distance and be done. But some questions, such as “What is a good life?” or “Is it ever right to break a promise?”, refuse to be settled in this way. Because of this, philosophy is sometimes said to be a waste of time.

I would argue, however, that these open questions are valuable precisely because they have no final answers. When we try to answer them, we are forced to examine the ideas we usually take for granted. A person who has never asked what fairness means may use the word every day, but only after questioning it does she notice that she has been using it in several different ways. In this sense, the purpose of such questions is not to end thinking but to make it more careful.

Consider a simple example. Two friends disagree about whether it is acceptable to tell a small lie to spare someone's feelings. At first, each thinks the other is simply wrong. But as they explain their reasons, one discovers that she values kindness most, while the other values trust. The disagreement does not vanish, yet they now understand where it comes from, and that understanding makes their conversation calmer and more useful.

Of course, endless questioning can be tiring, and a society cannot wait for perfect answers before it acts. Decisions must be made, and sometimes quickly. Still, decisions made after careful thought are usually better than those made by habit alone.

In short, questions without final answers are not useless. They train us to notice hidden assumptions, to listen to different values, and to hold our own views with humility. That is a skill worth practicing in daily life.

Questions without final answers may seem useless, but they are valuable. They make us examine ideas we take for granted and reveal the different values behind disagreements. Decisions must still be made, yet careful thought beats habit, and it makes our thinking more careful and humble.

I would argue, however
