Why Do We Throw Away Good Food?

In many wealthy countries, a surprising amount of edible food ends up in the trash. Some of it is thrown away in stores, some in restaurants, and a great deal in ordinary kitchens. Since food is cheap and easy to find, we rarely feel the loss when a vegetable is discarded. Yet each piece of wasted food also wastes the water, land, and energy used to grow and carry it.

One reason for this waste is our habit of judging food by appearance. Shops often refuse to sell fruit and vegetables that are bent, small, or slightly marked, because they expect customers to avoid them. Another reason is confusion about date labels. Many people believe that a printed date marks the moment when food becomes dangerous, although in many cases it only shows when the maker expects the taste to be at its best. As a result, safe food is often discarded simply because the date has passed.

Some solutions are already being tried. A few shops sell “imperfect” produce at lower prices, and some households plan meals in advance so that they buy only what they need. Simple habits, such as looking at and smelling food before deciding to throw it away, can also help.

Of course, safety cannot be ignored. Some foods, especially meat and fish, really can make people ill if they are kept too long, and no one should be asked to take unnecessary risks. The point is not to eat everything but to judge with knowledge rather than fear.

Reducing food waste, then, requires a change in how we see food. If we treat it as a valuable resource, not as something endlessly available, we can protect both our budgets and the environment.

Wealthy countries waste large amounts of edible food, along with the resources used to produce it. The causes are judging food by appearance and misunderstanding date labels. Some solutions exist, but safety matters, so people should judge with knowledge and treat food as a valuable resource.
