Ask Before You Judge

When we visit or meet people from another culture, we sometimes find their behavior strange. A greeting may seem too cold, a conversation too direct, or a meal too noisy. Our first reaction is often to decide that they are rude or mistaken. What we forget is that we are using our own habits as the standard by which we measure everyone else.

Habits that appear natural to us are, in fact, learned. Each culture has developed its own ways of showing respect, expressing disagreement, and using silence. In one place, arriving a little late to a gathering may be a courtesy to the host; in another, it may be a sign of carelessness. The same act can carry very different meanings, depending on the shared understanding of the people involved.

For this reason, an important skill in intercultural understanding is to suspend judgment and ask why. Instead of saying that something is wrong, we can ask what it means in that place. Such a question invites the other person to explain the reasons behind a custom, and it often shows that the custom has a sensible purpose in that setting. Through this process, our own habits also begin to look less like universal truths and more like one option among many.

Some people worry that this attitude leads to accepting everything. If every custom is simply a different way, they ask, how can we criticize a practice that harms people? This is a serious question. Understanding a custom does not require approving of it. We can try to grasp its background and still hold that certain practices violate basic human dignity. The point is that criticism is more effective when it is based on knowledge than on first impressions.

In a world where people from different backgrounds meet more often, the willingness to ask before judging is a practical necessity. It prevents needless conflict and opens the way to friendship.

People tend to judge other cultures by their own habits, but habits are learned and meanings differ across cultures. Suspending judgment and asking why helps us see our own customs as one option among many. Understanding is not the same as approval, and criticism should rest on knowledge.
