The standard explanation
After the surrender, Japan was administered by Allied forces under General MacArthur from 1945 until the peace treaty took effect on 28 April 1952. In those years the constitution was rewritten, land was redistributed from landlords to tenant farmers, the large family business groups were broken up, women received the vote, and the school system was rebuilt.

From September 1945 until April 1952, Japan was occupied and administered by Allied forces, in practice American ones, under General MacArthur. Almost seven years is a long time, and the period reshaped the country more thoroughly than any other stretch of the twentieth century. A new constitution came into force in 1947.
Land reform bought out landlords and sold the land cheaply to the families who had been farming it, which transformed rural Japan. The large family-controlled industrial groups were broken up. Women voted for the first time in 1946. The education system was rebuilt on a new pattern, and the police were decentralized.
Partway through, as the Cold War set in, American priorities shifted from reform to making Japan a stable ally, and some earlier measures were reversed. The occupation ended with the San Francisco peace treaty, though Okinawa remained under American administration until 1972.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWas the constitution written by Americans?
The draft that became the basis of the text was prepared by occupation staff in early 1946, then revised through the Japanese parliament. How much of it should be called imposed is exactly what the long-running amendment debate turns on.
QWhat was the reverse course?
The shift around 1948 to 1950, as the Cold War intensified, from breaking up concentrations of power to rebuilding Japan as an economically strong ally. Purges were relaxed for some, tightened for others, and labor and business policy changed direction.
