The standard explanation

Suteteko are loose, knee-length underpants, usually made of thin cotton. Men wear them under their trousers, especially in the hot and humid summer, because they absorb sweat and keep the trousers from sticking to the legs. For a long time, they were seen as something only older men wore. Today, colorful ones are also sold as loungewear for both men and women.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Suteteko are a kind of underwear that many visitors have never heard of. They're loose, knee-length underpants, usually made of thin cotton or a light, crinkled fabric. Men wear them under their trousers, mostly in summer. Japanese summers are hot and humid, and suteteko soak up sweat and stop the trousers from sticking to the legs, so the trousers feel cooler and stay cleaner.

For decades, though, suteteko had an image problem. People pictured an older man relaxing at home in an undershirt and suteteko, and young people didn't want to be seen in them. Around 2010, that began to change. Companies started selling suteteko in bright colors and patterns as comfortable loungewear, and many women started wearing them at home too.

The name has a funny history. It's said to come from a comic dance performed in the Meiji era by a rakugo storyteller, who showed his knee-length underpants on stage while he danced. I like the idea that a piece of underwear got its name from a comedy act.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Do people wear suteteko outside?

Usually not on their own, since they're underwear. But some newer ones look like shorts, and people may wear them to pop out to a nearby store. It depends on the person.

Q

Aren't they hot in summer?

They're actually meant to keep you cooler. The thin cotton absorbs sweat, so your trousers don't stick to your legs on a humid day.
