A sumo beya is both a training gym and a household. Wrestlers below the top divisions live in it, sleep in shared rooms, cook and clean for the senior wrestlers, and train every morning. A sumo beya, usually translated as stable, is where professional sumo actually happens. It is not a gym you attend but a house you live in. Wrestlers below the salaried divisions sleep in a shared room, get up before dawn to train, and spend the rest of the day doing the work of the household: cooking the communal stew, cleaning, laundry, and attending to the senior wrestlers, who eat first and bathe first.
Everything is ordered by rank. The stable is headed by an oyakata, a retired wrestler who holds one of a limited number of elder shares, and he is responsible for the wrestlers in a way closer to a guardian than a coach.
Wrestlers from the same stable normally do not fight each other in a tournament, which is why bout schedules are arranged across stables. Morning practice can sometimes be watched by visitors, but only by arrangement and under strict rules of silence.
相撲部屋は、大相撲が実際に営まれている場所です。通うジムではなく、住む家です。給料の出る番付に届かない力士は大部屋で寝起きし、夜明け前に起きて稽古し、残りの時間は家の仕事をします。

Sometimes, but not by turning up. Arrangements are usually made through a hotel, a guide or a tour, numbers are limited, and the rules are strict: sit on the floor, stay silent, no flash, no phone calls, no leaving mid-session.
できることもありますが、飛び込みでは無理です。ホテルや案内人、ツアーを通して手配するのがふつうで、人数も限られます。決まりは厳しく、床に座り、黙り、フラッシュを使わず、通話をせず、途中で退出しないことが求められます。

The stable dish is chanko, a large hot pot of meat, fish, tofu and vegetables in broth, eaten in enormous quantities after morning practice with rice. It is not fattening in itself; the weight comes from the volume and from sleeping after eating.
