The standard explanation

Sudomari means staying at an inn or hotel without any meals. At a ryokan, the standard price usually includes dinner and breakfast, so sudomari is the option for people who want to eat out or arrive late. It's often much cheaper, and in hot spring towns you can still use the baths. Not every ryokan offers it, so check the plan when you book.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Sudomari is a Japanese word for a room-only stay, with no meals included. To understand why it needs a special name, you have to know how ryokan, or traditional inns, usually set their prices. A typical ryokan plan is one night with two meals: a big dinner in the evening and breakfast the next morning.

The price is per person, so two guests pay about twice as much. That's a wonderful way to experience Japanese food, but it doesn't suit everyone. Some travelers arrive late, some want to try local restaurants, and some just want to save money. For them, sudomari is the answer.

You get the room, the futon and, in a hot spring town, the baths, but you find your own food. Many inns now offer room-only or breakfast-only plans as well. Personally, I think the best trip mixes both: one night with a full ryokan dinner, and one night eating out in town.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Can I still use the hot spring bath if I don't eat at the inn?

Yes, in most cases. The baths come with the room, not with the meals. Just check the bath hours, because some baths close late at night.

Q

Is sudomari always cheaper?

Usually, because you're not paying for dinner and breakfast. But the room itself isn't discounted much, and you'll spend money on food outside. In a small hot spring village, there may be very few restaurants open at night, so plan ahead.
