The shortest answer that works
Point cards are loyalty cards, and Japanese shops ask about them at almost every purchase.
In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Almost every Japanese shop, from drugstores to bookshops to convenience stores, runs a loyalty scheme, and the cashier will ask if you have the card before you pay. Points are usually worth about one yen each and can be spent on later purchases. Several big schemes are shared across many chains, so people collect them seriously, and apps have replaced most of the plastic. If you do not have one, a simple no is fine.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
If you shop in Japan for a week, you will hear the same question at every register: do you have a point card? Loyalty points are woven into daily commerce here to an unusual degree. A drugstore, a bookshop, an electronics chain, a convenience store and a restaurant may all belong to the same national points scheme, so the card you got at one place earns at the next, and a few large schemes compete to be the one in your wallet.
Points typically convert to about one yen each and are spent on future purchases, which makes people surprisingly loyal to a chain that offers double points on Tuesdays. Cashless payment apps now bundle points, payment and coupons together, and a whole hobby has grown around maximizing them.
For a visitor it is mostly noise: you can say no and the cashier will move on. But it explains why a Japanese wallet is so thick, and why a friend may pause at the register to tap three apps in a row.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QShould I get one as a tourist?
Usually not worth it, unless you will shop at the same chain repeatedly. Some cards are free and issued on the spot, so if you are staying for months, a drugstore or supermarket card pays off. Tax-free shopping and points can sometimes be combined, but do not expect it.
QWhy are there so many different schemes?
Because retailers, telecom companies and payment apps all compete to own the customer relationship, and points are the bait. Several national schemes span thousands of shops, and many chains also run their own. Japanese consumers accept the complexity because the rewards are real, if small.
QThe cashier asked me something and I panicked. What was it?
Almost certainly whether you have a point card, sometimes followed by whether you want a bag. A simple no with a small shake of the head handles both. Nobody minds.
