The standard explanation

Obi-musubi is the way the obi, or sash, is tied at the back of a kimono. The most common style for women's kimono is the otaiko, a neat, flat fold shaped like a box. Many young women tie a bow-like knot called bunko with a yukata. Men usually tie a small, flat knot called kai-no-kuchi.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

When people wear a kimono, the knot at the back often gets as much attention as the kimono itself. This is called obi-musubi, the way the sash is tied. The standard style for adult women is the otaiko, a flat, square fold that sits neatly on the back.

With a yukata, many young women tie a bunko, which looks like a big bow. With a furisode, the long-sleeved kimono worn at coming-of-age ceremonies, the knots can be large and showy. Men keep it simple, usually with a small knot called kai-no-kuchi.

Tying an obi well takes practice, so many people today use a pre-tied obi that is much easier to put on, and there is nothing wrong with that. Personally, I think the back view is the best part of a kimono.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Do I have to tie it behind my back?

The knot is worn at the back. A common trick is to tie it in front, where you can see it, and then carefully turn the whole obi around to the back.

Q

Why is it called otaiko?

Taiko means drum, and the name is often traced to the Taikobashi, the arched drum bridge at Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo. The story goes that geisha tied their obi this way to celebrate the rebuilt bridge in the late Edo period, but it is only one theory.

Q

Is a pre-tied obi cheating?

Not at all. Pre-tied obi, called tsukuri-obi, are common, especially with yukata. They look neat, and nobody expects a beginner to tie a perfect knot.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHThe obi is what holds a kimono closed.

FACTOn a woman's kimono, thin cords called koshihimo tied underneath do most of that work. The obi goes on top and is as much about the look as about holding things in place.
