what happened to Japan's reactors after 2011, and where policy stands now
In one line
The shortest answer that works
Japan had 54 reactors in 2011; 21 are being decommissioned and roughly fifteen have restarted.
In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Before the Fukushima accident in March 2011, Japan ran 54 commercial reactors supplying roughly a quarter to a third of its electricity. All were shut down for new safety reviews; since then 21 have been slated for decommissioning and about fifteen have restarted under stricter rules. Supporters of restarts cite stable supply, lower carbon emissions and cost, while opponents point to earthquake risk, nuclear waste and the lessons of 2011. Opinion remains divided.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
If someone asks whether Japan still uses nuclear power after Fukushima, the answer is yes, but much less. In March 2011 an earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, causing meltdowns and large evacuations.
Japan then had 54 commercial reactors, and all were eventually shut down; for about two years from 2013 to 2015 the country had no nuclear power running at all. A new regulator set stricter standards. Since then twenty-one of those reactors have been marked for decommissioning and around fifteen have restarted.
Opinion is divided. Supporters say nuclear power gives stable electricity, cuts carbon emissions and reduces fuel imports, a point that gained weight when energy prices rose in 2022. Opponents point to earthquake risk, the unsolved problem of waste disposal and the difficulty of evacuation plans.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
How much of Japan's electricity is nuclear now?
Under ten percent in recent years, against roughly a quarter to a third before 2011. The gap was filled mainly by imported gas and coal, which is why the 2022 price shock hit so hard.
Can you visit the Fukushima area?
Most of the prefecture was never evacuated and is ordinary. Restricted zones remain near the plant, while several evacuated towns have reopened with a fraction of their former population. There are guided tours and a public archive museum.
What do Japanese people think about it?
Opinion is divided, and polls vary with timing and wording. Support for restarts grew as electricity prices rose, while many people remain worried about safety, and near the plants some residents value the jobs while others fear accidents. Most people on both sides agree that final waste disposal is still unresolved.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHJapan abandoned nuclear power after Fukushima.
FACTAll reactors were stopped for review and many will never restart, but about fifteen are operating again under stricter rules, and policy since 2023 allows longer operating lives.
