In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Neyu is a bath so shallow that you lie down in it instead of sitting. You rest your head on a raised edge or a small pillow made of stone or wood, and warm water flows gently over your back. Many super sento and spa facilities have one. Because only part of your body is under water, you can stay in longer without getting dizzy from the heat.

As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Neyu is one of my favorite kinds of baths in Japan, and the name says it all: ne means lying down, and yu means hot water. Instead of sitting in a deep tub, you lie on your back in very shallow water. Your head rests on a stone or wooden pillow, and warm water runs slowly under your back and legs.
You'll find neyu at many super sento, the big bathhouses with lots of different pools, and at some hot spring resorts. Most of your chest stays out of the water, so many people find it easier on the body, and you don't get overheated as quickly.
Some people stay for twenty or thirty minutes and even fall asleep. The basic manners are the same as in any Japanese bath. Wash your body before you get in, keep your towel out of the water, and don't hog the spot if people are waiting. On a cold day, looking up at the sky from an outdoor neyu is hard to beat.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Isn't it dangerous to fall asleep in a bath?
The water is very shallow, so your face stays well above it. Still, it's easy to get dehydrated, so drink some water before and after, and get up slowly when you're done.
Do I need to bring anything special?
No. It's part of the regular bathing area, so you just need the same things as for any bath. Some places give you a small towel, but rules differ from place to place.
