The standard explanation
Japan has an unusually large number of family names, estimated at well over a hundred thousand, and most of them describe places: a field in the middle, a mountain field, a village center, the base of a slope. Commoners were permitted to use a surname in 1870 and required to register one in 1875, which is why the stock of names is so varied and so recent in its official form.

Japan has far more family names than most countries, with estimates well above a hundred thousand, and the reason is historical. Warrior families had names for centuries, but ordinary people were not permitted to use one publicly under the Edo order.
In 1870 the new government allowed commoners to take a surname, and in 1875 it required everyone to register one, because the state needed a workable system of records and conscription. Many households simply used what they had been called informally, and a great many of those were descriptions of where they lived.
That is why the commonest names read as landscape: a field in the middle, a mountain field, the center of the village, the base of the slope, the upper part of the river. The five most common, starting with Sato and Suzuki, cover several million people between them, and after the first few hundred the tail becomes extremely long, with names held by only a handful of families.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QIs it true that commoners had no surnames before?
Not quite. Many families had names they used among themselves and in temple records; what they lacked was the right to use one publicly. The 1875 order made registration compulsory rather than creating names from nothing.
QWhy do married couples share a name?
Because the civil code requires a married couple to use one surname, and there is no legal option to keep both. In practice the wife changes in the great majority of cases, and the rule is the subject of continuing debate and litigation.
QWhy can nobody read some names?
Because the characters can take several readings and families keep their own. The same two characters may be read three different ways by three different families, so Japanese people ask rather than guess, and forms have a line for the reading in kana.
