The standard explanation
Maai is a martial arts word for the distance between you and your opponent. In kendo, the basic distance is the one where one step forward lets you strike, and one step back keeps you safe. Controlling it is half the battle. In everyday Japanese, people also use maai for timing, like knowing the right moment to bring something up in a conversation.
間合いは、武道で自分と相手との距離を表す言葉です。剣道の基本の距離は、一歩踏みこめば打て、一歩下がれば相手の打ちをかわせる距離です。この距離を制することが、勝負の半分を決めます。日常の日本語でも、会話で話を切り出す頃合いのように、タイミングの意味で間合いと言います。
As a short speech

Maai is a key idea in Japanese martial arts. It means the distance between you and your opponent, but it's more than a number of meters. In kendo, the basic distance is called issoku itto no maai, or one-step, one-strike distance. From there, one step forward lets you hit your opponent, and one step back lets you get away from their attack.
If you're farther away, neither of you can reach. If you're closer, you can strike easily, but so can the other person. So skilled fighters keep adjusting the distance, trying to make it right for themselves and wrong for their opponent. The right maai also depends on your height, your speed, and your skill.
The word is used in daily life, too. Japanese people talk about judging the maai in a conversation, meaning finding the right moment to speak or to bring up a difficult topic. To me, that's a very Japanese idea: success depends on distance and timing as much as on strength.
