Kuki wo yomu literally means "to read the air." It means sensing what a group expects without anyone saying it, and adjusting yourself accordingly. Noticing that a meeting has run long and cutting your question short is reading the air. Japanese even has a label for people who fail at it: KY, short for kuki ga yomenai, someone who cannot read the room.
空気を読むは、文字どおりには「空気を読む」。誰も口に出さない場の期待を察し、それに合わせて自分を調整することです。会議が長引いていると気づいて質問を短く切り上げるのが、空気を読むということ。読めない人を指す言葉すらあります。「空気が読めない」を略した「KY」です。

In Japan there is an expression, kuki wo yomu, which means to read the air. It describes noticing what a group expects without anyone saying it out loud, and then adjusting your behavior.
If a meeting has already run twenty minutes over, you do not raise a new topic. If your boss orders a beer, most people will order a beer. The skill is considered a basic part of being an adult here, and there is a word for people who lack it.
On the other hand, this has real costs. If nobody says the uncomfortable thing, bad plans go ahead unchallenged. Younger Japanese people often criticize the pressure to read the air, and use the phrase more as a complaint than a compliment.
日本には「空気を読む」という言い方があります。誰も口に出さない場の期待を察し、それに合わせて振る舞うことです。会議がすでに20分延びていたら、新しい話題は出しません。
上司がビールを頼めば、多くの人がビールを頼みます。この力は日本では大人の基本とされ、それを欠く人を指す言葉まであります。一方で、これには確かな代償があります。
誰も言いにくいことを言わなければ、まずい計画がそのまま通ってしまいます。若い世代は空気を読む圧力を批判することが多く、この言葉をほめ言葉より不満として使います。

「KY（空気が読めない）」は2007年ごろに流行した若者言葉で、その年の流行語大賞にもノミネートされた。空気の重さについては、評論家・山本七平が1977年の『「空気」の研究』で、日本では「空気」が事実上の意思決定者になることがあると論じたのが有名。太平洋戦争の作戦決定を例に、誰も論理では賛成していないのに空気に逆らえず決まってしまう構造を指摘した。近年は「同調圧力」という言葉で批判的に語られることが増え、あえて空気を読まないことを肯定する風潮も出てきている。
