くうきをよむ

空気を読む

kuki wo yomureading the room
ことば・こころ Concepts / 仕事・会社 Work Culture標準 Standard
A guest reading the room and helping without being asked.

壱In one line一言で言うと

Kuki wo yomu means reading the mood of a group and acting on it without being told.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Kuki wo yomu literally means "to read the air." It means sensing what a group expects without anyone saying it, and adjusting yourself accordingly. Noticing that a meeting has run long and cutting your question short is reading the air. Japanese even has a label for people who fail at it: KY, short for kuki ga yomenai, someone who cannot read the room.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

In Japan there is an expression, kuki wo yomu, which means to read the air. It describes noticing what a group expects without anyone saying it out loud, and then adjusting your behavior.

If a meeting has already run twenty minutes over, you do not raise a new topic. If your boss orders a beer, many people will order a beer too. The skill is considered a basic part of being an adult here, and there is a word for people who lack it.

On the other hand, this has real costs. If nobody says the uncomfortable thing, bad plans go ahead unchallenged. Younger Japanese people often criticize the pressure to read the air, and use the phrase more as a complaint than a compliment.

空気を読むくうきをよむkuki wo yomureading the room

英語の read the room に近いが、日本では「読めない人」に専用の呼び名がある。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

空気を読むとは、その場の雰囲気を察して、言われなくてもそれに合わせて振る舞うことです。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

空気を読むは、文字どおりには「空気を読む」。誰も口に出さない場の期待を察し、それに合わせて自分を調整することです。会議が長引いていると気づいて質問を短く切り上げるのが、空気を読むということ。読めない人を指す言葉すらあります。「空気が読めない」を略した「KY」です。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIsn't that just 'reading the room' in English?

AVery close. The difference is how much weight it carries. In Japan it is treated as a required social skill rather than a nice extra, and failing at it has a name.

それは英語で言う「場の空気を読む」ことではないのですか。ほぼ同じです。違うのは重みです。日本ではあれば良いものではなく必須の社会的能力とされ、できないことには名前までついています。

QAs a foreigner, am I expected to do this?

AMuch less. People generally assume a visitor will not read the air, and they make allowances. Watching what everyone else does before you act covers most situations.

外国人にもそれが求められるのですか。求められる度合いはずっと低いです。外国の方は空気を読まないものと思われており、大目に見てもらえます。動く前に周りを見る、それでたいていは足ります。

QDo Japanese people think this is a good thing?

AOpinions are split. It makes groups run smoothly, but it also silences people who should speak up. After several corporate scandals, "nobody felt able to go against the mood" became a familiar explanation.

日本人はそれを良いことだと思っているのですか。意見は分かれます。集団は円滑に回りますが、言うべき人を黙らせもします。いくつもの企業不祥事のあと、「誰も空気に逆らえなかった」という説明がよく聞かれるようになりました。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • He couldn't read the room at all.彼はまったく空気が読めていませんでした。
  • Nobody said it, but everyone understood.誰も言いませんでしたが、全員が分かっていました。
  • Just watch what everyone else does first.まず周りがどうするか見ればいいですよ。
  • Sometimes someone has to break the mood and say it.ときには空気を壊してでも言う人が必要です。
  • We even have an abbreviation for people who can't do it.できない人を指す略語まであります。

豆知識Background
