The standard explanation

Kimarite are the winning techniques of sumo. After every bout, the winning move is announced by name, such as yorikiri, a force-out, or uwatenage, an overarm throw. The Japan Sumo Association officially lists 82 techniques. It also lists five ways to lose without the opponent using any technique, such as stepping out of the ring too soon. Knowing a few names makes watching sumo much more fun.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

In sumo, every bout ends with a name. The moment one wrestler wins, the technique that decided it is announced in the arena and written into the official results. These are called kimarite.

The Japan Sumo Association recognizes 82 of them, including pushes, throws, trips and some moves that almost never appear. The list grew from 70 to 82 in 2001, because wrestlers had started winning in ways the old list could not describe.

In reality, though, a large share of bouts are decided by a few basic moves. According to several counts, pushing out, called oshidashi, and forcing out while holding the belt, called yorikiri, make up about half of all wins. I think that is what makes a rare technique so exciting when it finally appears.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

What is the most common way to win?

Oshidashi, pushing the opponent out, and yorikiri, forcing him out while gripping the belt. Counts of recent years show that these two alone account for about half of all bouts.

Q

Can you lose without the other wrestler doing anything?

Yes. There are five official non-techniques. The best known is isamiashi, when a wrestler who is winning steps out of the ring too early because he is rushing forward.

Q

Why did the number of techniques change?

Wrestlers got bigger and faster, and some wins no longer fit any name on the old list of 70. So in 2001, the Japan Sumo Association added new names and made it 82.
