The Hyakunin Isshu is a set of one hundred tanka, each by a different poet, traditionally said to have been selected by Fujiwara no Teika in the thirteenth century. It is best known as a card game: a reader recites a poem and players race to grab the card carrying its second half. Competitive play is fast enough to be a sport.

The Hyakunin Isshu is an anthology of one hundred classical Japanese poems, one each by a hundred poets, traditionally attributed to the selection of Fujiwara no Teika in the thirteenth century. Most Japanese people meet it not as literature but as a game.
A reader chants the poem, and players kneeling around the cards race to snatch the card printed with its second half. Since serious players memorize all hundred, the real contest is in the opening syllables: some poems are identified by the first sound alone, so the winning move happens before the reader has finished a word.
Competitive karuta is played in tournaments with a formal ranked system, and a manga and film series about it raised its profile considerably. At home, families still play at New Year, badly and cheerfully, which is how most people know a few of the poems by heart without ever studying them.
百人一首は、百人の歌人の歌を一首ずつ集めた古典和歌の撰集で、13世紀に藤原定家が選んだと伝えられます。日本人の多くがこれに出会うのは文学としてではなく、遊びとしてです。
読み手が歌を読み上げ、札の周りに座った取り手が下の句の書かれた札を奪い合います。本気の競技者は百首すべてを覚えているので、実際の勝負は最初の数音で決まります。最初の一音だけで特定できる歌もあり、読み手が一語を言い終える前に勝負がついているのです。
競技かるたは正式な段位のある大会として行われ、漫画と映画の作品によって広く知られるようになりました。家庭では今も正月に、下手なりに楽しく遊びます。だから多くの人は、勉強した覚えもないまま、いくつかの歌をそらんじているのです。

They react at the earliest point where it becomes identifiable. Competitors memorize the shortest distinguishing opening of each poem, some as short as one sound, so the hand is already moving while the reader is still on the first word.

Yes. The game rewards recognizing sounds and card positions rather than understanding the poems, and beginners play with a smaller set. Understanding the poetry is a separate pleasure, and the language is genuinely difficult.
