The family restaurant is one of the more useful things to know about ordinary Japanese life. These are chains, and the menu is deliberately enormous and mixed: hamburger steak, spaghetti, fried chicken, curry, grilled fish with rice, parfaits, all in one book with photographs and low prices.
The thing that defines them is the drink bar, a self-service machine of soft drinks, coffee and tea for a few hundred yen with unlimited refills, and the fact that nobody will ask you to leave. So a family restaurant at four in the afternoon holds students doing homework, a salesperson typing, two mothers talking, and an elderly couple with coffee, all of whom have been there a long while.
They open late or around the clock, with baby chairs and children's menus, and many now take orders on a table tablet and deliver plates by robot, partly because staff are hard to hire. For a visitor they are genuinely convenient: an English or picture menu is usually available, nothing is expensive, and you can sit down with a laptop without ordering a meal.
