Japanese martial arts rank students in kyu grades, counting down, and then dan grades, counting up. Reaching first dan earns the black belt, which marks the point where the basics are in place and real study begins. The dan system was borrowed from go and shogi, where it had been used for centuries, and applied to judo in the nineteenth century.

The belt system that the whole world now associates with martial arts is younger than most people think, and it did not start with fighting at all. Ranks called dan had been used for centuries in go and shogi to grade players, and in the nineteenth century Kano Jigoro, the founder of judo, applied that system to his students and marked the higher grades with a black belt.
Karate and other arts adopted it afterwards, and the colored belts below black were largely a later addition, spread through Europe. The important thing to understand is what a black belt means. First dan says the basics are in place and you are now ready to learn properly.
In most Japanese arts a first dan is still a beginner in the eyes of the hall, and the higher grades take decades. Calling someone a black belt as if that settled the question of skill would strike a Japanese practitioner as odd.
今では世界中が武道と結びつけて考える帯の仕組みは、多くの人が思うより新しく、そもそも戦いから始まったものではありません。段という位は、囲碁と将棋で何世紀も前から打ち手の力を表すのに使われていました。
19世紀に柔道の創始者である嘉納治五郎がその仕組みを門人に当てはめ、上位を黒帯で示しました。空手などがそれに続き、黒帯より下の色帯はおおむね後から加えられ、ヨーロッパを経て広まりました。大事なのは黒帯が何を意味するかです。
初段は、基礎ができたのでこれからきちんと学べます、ということです。日本の多くの武道では、初段は道場の目にはまだ初心者で、上の段には何十年もかかります。黒帯だと言えば腕前の話が済むかのように扱うのは、日本で稽古している人には奇妙に映ります。

QHow long does it take to get a black belt?
It varies enormously by art and by organization. Three to five years of regular practice is common in judo or karate, but some arts take much longer, and grading requirements differ between countries, which is why a rank does not always transfer.
武道と団体によって大きく違います。柔道や空手では、定期的に稽古して3年から5年ほどが一般的ですが、もっとかかる武道もあり、審査の基準は国によっても違います。だから位がそのまま通用するとは限りません。
QWhat are the belt colors below black?
They differ by art and country. Japanese judo traditionally used white and brown for adults, while the full rainbow of colors familiar abroad developed largely outside Japan, partly to give beginners visible milestones.

A common misunderstanding
MYTHA black belt means you have mastered the art.
FACTIt means the basics are complete. In Japanese usage first dan is the entry to serious study, and senior grades take decades of continued practice.
